Deutsche Telekom is entering a critical phase as it prepares for wage negotiations with the ver.di union, set to commence on April 13. The timing presents a challenge for the telecom giant, with its share price having recently softened. Investors are closely monitoring whether the union's substantial pay demands will impact the company's full-year financial targets.

Financial Resilience Meets Rising Labor Costs

The company enters these talks from a position of underlying financial strength. For the 2025 fiscal year, Deutsche Telekom reported a 2% increase in its Free Cashflow AL, which reached 19.5 billion euros. This robust liquidity provides management with some flexibility. Furthermore, the second tranche of a share buyback program, valued at up to 550 million euros, is ongoing and scheduled for completion by the end of June.

However, personnel expenses represent a major cost component, particularly within customer service and field operations. The union's demands are significant: a 6.6% pay increase over a 12-month period for approximately 60,000 employees covered by collective bargaining agreements. Additionally, ver.di is seeking an annual membership bonus of 660 euros per worker and a 120-euro monthly raise in apprenticeship allowances. The negotiation agenda also includes job protection guarantees and future employment prospects related to digital transformation. Four rounds of talks are scheduled, concluding by the end of May.
