A 68-year-old driver from Wiehl lost his life on Tuesday morning after his car veered off the Zeitstraße and slammed into a tree. The accident, which occurred around 11 a.m., overshadowed a large-scale police operation that was part of the national Traffic Safety Day. Rescuers attempted to revive the man at the scene but failed; a helicopter was called off as it was no longer needed. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.
The tragedy unfolded the same day officers in the Oberbergischer Kreis conducted intensive speed checks. Their tally: 114 motorists caught exceeding the limit. That figure breaks down into 29 motorcyclists and 85 car or truck drivers. Police issued 92 warning fines and opened 22 administrative offence proceedings.
The worst offender was a driver clocked at 84 km/h in a 60 km/h zone near Marienheide-Gogarten. That was the highest reading of the day. Officers were not only looking for speeders. On Kreisstraße 19, twelve motorcyclists ignored a through-traffic ban. The same team also held prevention talks, including a stop at the Bevertalsperre reservoir.
Neighbouring districts ran their own checks over the weekend. In the Mettmann district, police focused on Velbert and Heiligenhaus. About 900 measurements at the Rottberger Strasse produced 73 violations. One motorcyclist was recorded doing 141 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. That rider faces a €700 fine, two penalty points, and a three-month driving ban.
On June 21, the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis held a special action called “Coffee and Tickets.” At the L101 in Kreckersweg, officers checked nearly 90 bikers. Together with the TÜV technical inspection service, they measured noise levels. Three motorcycles failed the sound check and were not allowed to continue.
On the preceding day, police in Recklinghausen issued 69 warnings for speeding in Haltern am See.
The fatal crash in Wiehl drove home the sobering reality behind the numbers. Despite the high number of violations caught, safety on the roads remains a pressing challenge.
