D-Wave Quantum: Subscription Revenue Gains Traction as $588 Million Treasury Funds Gate-Model Push After Q1 Revenue Slide

Despite an 81% revenue drop from a one-off system sale, D-Wave's record $33.4M bookings and $588M cash position signal strong commercial traction ahead.

D-Wave Quantum is navigating a strategic transformation that has left its quarterly revenue deeply distorted but its balance sheet and order book in the best shape in years. The company ended the first quarter of its fiscal 2026 with roughly $588 million in cash and equivalents, thanks in part to recent capital raises, even as top-line sales tumbled 81% to $2.86 million. That headline decline, however, is almost entirely attributable to a large one-off system sale that had boosted the prior-year quarter to $15 million.

Stripping out that non-recurring item, the underlying picture brightens. D-Wave posted an adjusted net loss of just $0.05 per share, handily beating the consensus range of $0.08 to $0.10. Reported net loss for the quarter came in at $18.4 million, also ahead of analyst expectations. Over the trailing twelve months through the end of 2025, the cumulative net loss stood at $355 million, underscoring the urgency of converting a growing backlog into recognizable revenue.

The most potent sign of future demand was a record surge in bookings. New orders hit $33.4 million, a near-2,000% jump year over year and a 149% sequential increase. Separately, outstanding performance obligations — a measure of contracted but not yet delivered work — vaulted past the $42 million mark, reflecting more than 500% growth from the same period last year. Management is pushing to accelerate the monetization of this pipeline by doubling or tripling the pace of system deliveries, aiming for two to three full-system sales per year compared with the previous cadence of one.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

The subscription-focused "Quantum Computing as a Service" segment, which the company hopes will provide predictable recurring revenue, grew 15% to $1.8 million. To bolster that shift and sharpen its operational focus, D-Wave is relocating its headquarters to Boca Raton, Florida. On the technology side, the company laid out a roadmap to deliver a system with 100 logical qubits by 2032, while analysts described the timetable for its gate-model architecture as "tangible."

Wall Street has taken a measured view of the mixed results. Canaccord Genuity trimmed its price target to $41 but maintained a buy rating, citing the bookings strength as evidence of growing commercial traction. The broader consensus among 13 analysts remains a "Strong Buy," with an average target of $40.67. Despite that optimism, shares fell about 7% on the day of the earnings release and were recently trading around €18.04 in European listings, roughly 25% below the 200-day moving average of €20. The stock later recovered to close at €18.26 Wednesday, leaving it comfortably above the session low but still beneath that key technical level.

Investors will get a deeper look at D-Wave’s strategy on June 1, when the company hosts its first-ever Investor Day at the New York Stock Exchange. Management is expected to detail how it plans to translate its record order book and $588 million cash cushion into sustainable revenue growth, with at least two full-system deliveries already scheduled for the second half of the year.
