This weekend, D-Wave Quantum Inc. is set to unveil new research findings at the APS Global Physics Summit in Denver, the world's largest physics conference. The timing is strategic, coming just weeks after the company reported a fiscal year featuring 179% revenue growth, as it aims to demonstrate both commercial and scientific prowess.

A Tale of Strong Annual Results and a Weak Quarter

Fiscal year 2025 marked a significant milestone for D-Wave in several respects. Annual revenue surged to $24.6 million, supported by a substantial gross margin of 82.6%. Despite these gains, the company continues to burn through considerable capital, with operating losses remaining elevated. The fourth quarter proved particularly disappointing against Wall Street forecasts. Quarterly revenue of $2.75 million fell 26% short of the $3.72 million consensus estimate. On an adjusted basis, the net loss per share was $0.09, worse than the projected loss of $0.06.

A major positive, however, is a dramatically strengthened balance sheet. D-Wave ended the year with $884.5 million in cash and marketable securities—a 397% increase year-over-year. This boost was fueled in part by $63.7 million generated from option exercises during Q4.

Strategic Acquisition and Defense Sector Momentum

The most strategically significant move was the announced acquisition of Quantum Circuits, Inc. for $550 million. The deal is structured as $300 million in D-Wave stock and $250 million in cash. Quantum Circuits specializes in developing error-corrected superconducting gate-model systems. According to D-Wave, the company's Dual-Rail qubits can detect 90% of all occurring errors and achieve gate fidelities exceeding 99.9%. This acquisition is intended to expand D-Wave's historical focus on annealing quantum computing by adding a full-scale gate-model platform, accelerating its path toward scalable, error-corrected systems.

Concurrently, D-Wave is advancing its presence in the U.S. defense sector. In a collaboration with Anduril and Davidson, the company tested quantum algorithms for air and missile defense planning. The tests reportedly demonstrated a speed advantage of at least 10x over classical approaches, alongside improved threat neutralization in simulations. To further expand its government business, a dedicated division has been established under Jack Sears Jr.

Robust Bookings Point to Commercial Traction

The company's booking activity signals growing commercial demand. In January 2026 alone, D-Wave reported bookings exceeding $30 million. As of February 25, total bookings for the current first quarter had surpassed $32.8 million. Separately, Florida Atlantic University signed a contract to purchase an Advantage2 system for $20 million, with installation at its Boca Raton campus planned for later in 2026. D-Wave is also relocating its corporate headquarters and establishing a new U.S. research facility to the same location.

Analyst Sentiment and the Valuation Gap

Currently, 15 analysts covering the stock maintain a consensus "Strong Buy" rating, with an average price target of $32.53. The shares recently traded at $17.83, a level still far below the 52-week high of $46.75. Some analysts have trimmed their targets, reflecting anticipated higher operating costs following the Quantum Circuits acquisition. The successful integration of this acquisition and the timely market launch of D-Wave's first gate-model system, targeted for 2026, are now seen as critical factors that will determine whether the stock can close the substantial valuation gap between its current price and the analyst consensus.
