This week, D-Wave Quantum is showcasing new research findings at the American Physical Society's Global Physics Summit in Denver, the world's largest physics conference. The timing is strategic, coming on the heels of a disappointing quarterly earnings report, as the company seeks to underscore its scientific credentials.

A Solid Year Overshadowed by a Weak Quarter

For the full fiscal year 2025, D-Wave reported significant growth, with annual revenue reaching $24.6 million. This figure represents a substantial 179% increase compared to 2024. The company's balance sheet remains robust, ending the year with $884.5 million in cash and liquid securities—a 397% surge bolstered by $63.7 million from option exercises in Q4.

However, the fourth-quarter results, released in late February, fell short of market expectations. D-Wave posted an adjusted loss of $0.09 per share on revenue of $2.8 million. Market experts had anticipated a smaller loss of $0.06 per share and revenues closer to $3.7 million. A concerning signal was a 27% year-over-year decline in quarterly bookings, which dropped to $13.4 million.

Strategic Acquisition and a Strong Start to 2026

In a major strategic move early in 2026, D-Wave completed the acquisition of Quantum Circuits Inc., a developer of error-corrected superconducting gate-model quantum computers. The total purchase price was $550 million, comprising $300 million in D-Wave stock and $250 million in cash. The company states that Quantum Circuits' technology can identify 90% of all occurring errors and achieves gate fidelities exceeding 99.9%. According to CEO Dr. Alan Baratz, this gate-model capability "effectively allows us to double our total addressable market."

The early booking momentum for 2026 has been remarkable. In January alone, D-Wave secured orders exceeding $30 million. By February 25th, total bookings for the ongoing first quarter had climbed to $32.8 million, already surpassing the pace set throughout the entire previous year.

Concurrently, D-Wave is establishing a dedicated business unit focused on the U.S. government sector, led by Jack Sears Jr., who brings over 25 years of experience in defense and aerospace.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

Macro Pressures and Valuation Concerns

The company's shares faced downward pressure in February, declining approximately 11.5% for the month and are down about 27% year-to-date. Beyond the weak quarterly report, the stock was weighed down by broader market factors. These included an unexpectedly high January Producer Price Index (PPI) increase of 0.8%, against economist forecasts of 0.3%, and a general risk-off sentiment toward high-growth technology equities.

D-Wave's current market valuation stands at around $6.9 billion, which translates to roughly 157 times its expected sales.

Looking Ahead: From Research to Results

Presentations at the APS Summit from March 15th to 20th will cover topics including analog-digital processor control, error correction, and programmable quantum dynamics. The key question for investors is whether the strong booking trends and the company's now-unique dual-platform strategy will translate into operational profitability. The answer will become clearer with the release of D-Wave's first-quarter 2026 financial results.
