All eyes are on D-Wave Quantum’s first-ever Investor Day on June 1 at the New York Stock Exchange, where management will lay out the commercialisation timeline for its new gate-model systems and provide fresh technical details on the Advantage2 annealing platform. The event arrives at a delicate moment: the stock has been caught in a sector-wide unwind that erased roughly 7% on Friday, closing at €17.52 ($20.68), as profit-taking swept across quantum computing names. Rivals IonQ and Rigetti Computing suffered similar fates, with IonQ sliding nearly 9% and Rigetti dropping between 6% and 10%.

The pullback comes despite a string of operational positives that, under normal circumstances, might have buoyed sentiment. D-Wave’s first-quarter report, released Tuesday, revealed a net loss of $0.05 per share — beating consensus estimates of $0.08 — even as revenue of $2.9 million fell well short of the $4.2 million analysts had pencilled in. The real headline, however, was bookings: new orders reached $33.4 million, a figure that dramatically outstrips the quarter’s top line and underscores growing demand. Among the contracts propelling that backlog are a $20 million university deal and a $10 million agreement with a Fortune-100 company for quantum-computing-as-a-service.

That disconnect between bookings and recognised revenue is the central tension investors are wrestling with. D-Wave ended the period with $588.4 million in cash and zero debt, giving it ample runway to convert orders into recurring income and improve margins. Millennium Management, which held roughly 2.27 million shares acquired for about $16.4 million at the end of 2024, is among the institutional holders betting that patience will pay off.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

Strategically, the company is pursuing two parallel technology paths after its acquisition of Quantum Circuits. Alongside its established quantum-annealing approach, D-Wave is now developing superconducting gate-model systems that CEO Alan Baratz says are better suited for scientific and cryptographic applications. The roadmap targets around 175 physical qubits by 2028, ten logical qubits by 2030, and 100 logical qubits by 2032. Management also expects to deliver two to three systems per year, with at least two shipments scheduled for 2026.

Wall Street analysts remain broadly bullish. Needham & Company reaffirmed a buy rating with a $40 price target, while Jefferies and Cantor Fitzgerald chimed in with positive assessments. The broader consensus from 16 analysts sees 2026 revenue reaching $43.4 million — a 248% surge from the prior year — with a projected net loss of $0.39 per share. The average price target stands at $35.17, though the wide range of $19.58 to $45.00 highlights the uncertainty around the pace and profitability of commercialisation.

Technically, the stock is on shaky ground. The 50-day moving average at €15.68 ($17.70) provides a floor, while the 200-day average at €20.01 ($22.60) has acted as a stubborn resistance level. With a relative strength index near 35, D-Wave is flirting with oversold territory. Year-to-date, the shares have lost roughly 27%, although they still trade 77% higher than 12 months ago.

At the Investor Day, the market will be looking for concrete evidence that the booking surge is translating into scalable, repeatable revenues. With the quantum sector in a corrective phase, D-Wave needs to convince investors that its dual-platform strategy and healthy cash pile can carry it through the valley between promise and profit.
