The stock closed Friday at $21.69, propelled by a surge in trading volume that saw 90.2 million shares change hands on Wednesday alone—227% above the three-month average.

The core of the rally is a fundamental shift in the company's commercial traction. D-Wave has already secured $32.8 million in bookings since the start of the year, a figure that dwarfs its total revenue for the entire 2025 fiscal year, which stood at $24.6 million. This explosive growth is anchored by two landmark deals: a $20 million system sale to Florida Atlantic University and a separate two-year, $10 million enterprise cloud services contract with a major U.S. corporation.

CEO Alan Baratz has been aggressively framing this progress on the global stage. At both the Semafor World Economy Summit and the QED-C Quantum Summit in mid-April, he positioned D-Wave’s technology as a practical, energy-efficient solution already in use by clients like Volkswagen and Lockheed Martin for logistics and scheduling. "Our quantum computers have already solved problems that classical systems simply cannot solve," Baratz told Yahoo Finance, highlighting that a D-Wave system consumes about 10 kilowatts, a fraction of the power required by a classical data center for the same task.

This energy-efficiency thesis received a significant tailwind from the broader sector. Nvidia's recent introduction of an open-source model named "Ising," designed specifically for quantum workloads, ignited investor enthusiasm for quantum optimization, D-Wave's specialty.

Financially, the company's fourth-quarter 2025 bookings of $13.4 million represented a sequential increase of 471%. Full-year revenue grew 179% to $24.6 million, accompanied by a robust gross margin of 82.6%. The balance sheet is notably strong, with cash and securities of $884.5 million at the end of 2025—nearly five times the level from a year earlier. This war chest provides a comfortable cushion despite an adjusted EBITDA loss of $71.8 million, where losses are currently growing faster than revenue.

Market sentiment has turned decidedly bullish. The put-call ratio fell to an extreme 0.36 on Friday, well below its typical level around 0.47, indicating heavy betting on further gains. Analyst opinions, however, reflect the stock's high-stakes valuation. While Mizuho Securities maintained its Outperform rating, it trimmed its price target from $40 to $31, citing rising competition and expenses. Even at the reduced target, the bank sees over 100% upside from recent levels around $22.215.

The central debate remains valuation. The equity trades at roughly 43 times the $144 million in revenue analysts expect for 2028. Critics also point to a reliance on large, one-off deals rather than predictable recurring revenue. A major strategic move was the $550 million acquisition of Quantum Circuits Inc., which made D-Wave the sole provider with both annealing and gate-model quantum platforms, addressing a key bearish concern.

Looking ahead, the company's roadmap includes launching its first universal quantum system by the end of 2026. Until then, its current prototype, which processes specific tasks one hundred times faster than its predecessor, will drive commercial efforts. Whether the booking momentum of early 2026 can be sustained will become clearer with the next quarterly results. For now, despite its powerful sprint from under $14 to over $22, the stock remains well below its 52-week high of $46.75.
