D-Wave shares surged 45% in two days after CEO Alan Baratz challenged Nvidia's new quantum models, backed by 179% revenue growth and a key acquisition.

A provocative statement from D-Wave Quantum's CEO, Alan Baratz, helped ignite a dramatic two-day surge in the company's shares. The stock rocketed from around $15 to an intraday high of $21.79, with trading volume spiking to nearly 98 million shares—almost five times its average. This rally, which included a single-day jump of up to 22.5% on April 15, 2026, was fueled by a mix of competitive bravado and concrete financial progress.

The immediate catalyst was an unexpected move by industry giant Nvidia. The chipmaker announced NVIDIA Ising, described as the world's first family of open-source quantum models designed to help build practical quantum processors. The models target key hurdles like error correction and calibration, with Nvidia claiming its Ising decoder works 2.5 times faster and three times more accurately than the widely-used pyMatching decoder, while requiring ten times less training data. Early adopters include Cornell University, Sandia National Laboratories, and IonQ.

Rather than welcome Nvidia's entry, Baratz seized it as an opportunity to draw a stark contrast. Speaking at the Semafor World Economy Summit on April 14, he declared, "If I were Nvidia, I'd be shaking in my boots." He argued that D-Wave's quantum computer could solve certain problems in minutes that would take a Nvidia-based system a million years and the entire world's electricity supply. Baratz reinforced this message the following day at the QED-C Quantum Summit, coinciding with World Quantum Day 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

Behind the rhetoric lies a company demonstrating rapid commercial traction. For the full year 2025, D-Wave reported revenue of $24.6 million, a staggering 179% year-over-year increase. Perhaps more tellingly, the company secured over $32.8 million in new bookings after the fiscal year closed, signaling strong demand heading into 2026. The company also finalized its acquisition of Quantum Circuits Inc., a developer of error-corrected superconducting gate-model systems. This move establishes D-Wave's dual-platform strategy, pairing its established annealing systems with a new gate-model system expected in 2026.

The fundamental picture remains that of an early-stage, high-growth company. D-Wave boasts a gross margin of 82.6% but operates at a significant loss, with a recent quarterly free cash flow of negative $20.2 million. Its price-to-sales ratio exceeds 200. However, it holds a substantial war chest of approximately $635 million in cash with minimal debt, providing a multi-year runway. Analyst firm Mizuho recently lowered its price target from $40 to $31, citing increased competition and higher spending, but maintained its Outperform rating. That target still implies over 40% upside from recent levels around $21.

The broader market context is one of expansion. The global quantum computing market reached $1.9 billion in 2025, according to QED-C, and is projected to grow at a 30% annual rate to $3 billion by 2028. D-Wave's recent performance and strategic acquisitions position it to capitalize on this growth, particularly in logistics, manufacturing, and financial services where classical computing faces limitations.

The April surge reflects a shifting perception: quantum computing is moving from pure research toward practical application. D-Wave's combination of explosive revenue growth, a robust bookings pipeline, and an expanded technology portfolio provides tangible evidence. The next test will be the first-quarter 2026 results, which will show if those late-2025 bookings are successfully converting into revenue. For now, the company has successfully turned a competitor's announcement into a platform for its own ambitious vision.
