D-Wave Quantum heads into its first-quarter earnings release with a balance sheet that would make most quantum startups envious. The company, which merged with Quantum Circuits Inc., now holds roughly $884 million in cash — a war chest that gives it serious runway to invest in technology and talent while many peers scramble for funding.

But cash alone doesn’t build a sustainable business. On May 12, before the market opens, investors will get their first look at whether D-Wave can convert its recent technical breakthroughs and a flurry of new orders into genuine revenue growth. CEO Alan Baratz and CFO John Markovich will host a conference call at 8:00 a.m. Eastern time to walk through the numbers.

A Scientific Milestone That Raises the Bar

The company enters earnings on the back of a significant achievement. A new prototype of its Advantage2 processor, equipped with 4,400 qubits, outperformed the Frontier supercomputer in solving quantum dynamics problems related to materials science. Classical systems required more than 100,000 computing hours to approximate the same results — a gap that analysts are calling the first concrete demonstration of quantum supremacy in a practical application.

That technical edge is now the centerpiece of D-Wave’s dual-track strategy. The company continues to develop both annealing systems and gate-model quantum computers. New annealing capabilities are already available to select customers, while the first gate-model system is expected by the end of 2026, accelerated by the Quantum Circuits acquisition and advances in cryogenic on-chip control.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

The Conference Blitz Begins Right After Earnings

D-Wave has packed its calendar with six investor conferences over the seven weeks following the earnings release. The roadshow kicks off with Needham on May 14, followed by J.P. Morgan in Boston on May 20, a virtual quantum event from Canaccord Genuity on May 21, and then TD Cowen, Baird, and Rosenblatt through June 10.

The timing is deliberate. Management will have fresh quarterly results to present, and the conference circuit offers a chance to build institutional interest — something the company badly needs if it wants to diversify its customer base beyond a handful of large buyers.

The Numbers That Matter

D-Wave reported bookings of $32.8 million for the early part of fiscal 2026. That figure includes a $20 million order from Florida Atlantic University for an Advantage2 system — a single large contract that underscores the company’s reliance on big-ticket sales. An additional deal in Italy brought in €10 million.

The core challenge remains recurring revenue. D-Wave is burning cash as it scales its Quantum Computing as a Service (QCaaS) business, and cloud subscription income is still thin. Investors will be watching closely for signs that the company can grow its annuity-style revenue fast enough to offset operating losses and dilution.

A Nvidia-Driven Rally Meets Reality

The stock surged roughly 54 percent in mid-April after Nvidia published Ising quantum models for AI. D-Wave benefits from being part of Nvidia’s hybrid quantum stack, and the market took notice. On Tuesday, shares traded at $18.90, about 5.5 percent above the day’s low of $17.91, though volume of 19.6 million shares came in well below the daily average of 46.2 million.

D-Wave Quantum at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

That rally has set a high bar for the May 12 report. Analysts have set average price targets around $35, betting that D-Wave can translate its technical lead into commercial momentum. The $32.8 million in bookings provides a foundation, but the question is whether the company can build on it — or whether the recent stock move was simply riding the Nvidia wave.

What’s at Stake

D-Wave’s cash position gives it breathing room that few quantum peers enjoy. The company plans to grow its New Haven development team by 50 percent this year and is shifting key research operations to Florida. But the May 12 earnings report will test whether the science is translating into sales. If the numbers disappoint, all that cash won’t matter much to investors who are already pricing in a commercial breakthrough.
