D-Wave reports 81% revenue drop but bookings surge 20x to $33.4M; bets on hybrid annealing/gate-model platform for growth.

D-Wave Quantum is banking on its balance sheet to underwrite a high-stakes strategic overhaul. With nearly $588 million in cash on hand after absorbing a $250 million acquisition, the company is betting that a dual architecture – blending its established quantum annealing technology with a new gate-model platform – can unlock broader commercial and scientific markets. The financial results for the first quarter tell a story of two very different realities: a sharp revenue decline and a flood of incoming orders that signals robust demand beneath the surface.

Quarterly revenue slumped to $2.86 million, an 81% drop from the $15 million posted a year earlier. The comparison is heavily skewed by a one-off system sale in the prior year that contributed roughly $12.6 million. That distortion, management argues, masks steady underlying traction in recurring revenue. The net loss widened to $18.4 million, but came in better than the $0.08 per share loss analysts had penciled in, with actual EPS at $0.05.

The real story, however, lies in the order book. Bookings hit $33.4 million in the quarter, nearly 20 times the year-ago figure, driven by a $20 million system sale and a $10 million enterprise license from a Fortune 100 customer. The backlog of remaining performance obligations soared 563% to $42.4 million. This compares with total revenue of just a fraction of that, underscoring the lumpy, project-driven nature of the hardware business today.

D-Wave is increasingly leaning on a subscription model to smooth out those swings. Quantum-computing-as-a-service revenue rose 15% to $1.8 million, and the company has relocated its headquarters to Boca Raton, Florida, to consolidate development. The strategic shift accelerated with the acquisition of Quantum Circuits, which added gate-model capabilities to the product mix. That move, combined with the annealing platform, creates what executives describe as a full-stack offering for optimization, simulation and broader workloads.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

The hardware roadmap is ambitious. D-Wave aims to deliver 17 physical qubits on the gate-model platform by the end of 2026, scaling to 175 physical qubits by 2028. The ultimate target is 100 logical qubits by 2032, with a milestone of 10 logical qubits by 2030. For the current year, management expects at least two system deliveries, with the backlog likely to accelerate in the second half.

Wall Street has taken a measured view. Mizuho trimmed its price target from $31 to $29, citing the revenue shortfall, while Canaccord Genuity lowered its target to $41 but maintained a positive rating. Of the 17 analysts covering the stock, 14 recommend buying. The consensus price target stands at roughly $34.67.

Shares were trading at €18.34 on Thursday, up 0.44% on the day and about 27% higher over the past month. Despite the recent bounce, the stock remains well off its year-to-date highs and still sits below its 200-day moving average, a technical signal that investors remain cautious about the transformation timeline.

D-Wave Quantum at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

D-Wave will lay out further commercialization details at an investor day in New York on June 1. The next quarterly report is due August 6. Until then, the investment thesis rests on a sharp contrast: lumpy revenue, a ballooning order book and a thick cash cushion that gives the company time to execute one of the most ambitious pivots in quantum computing.
