D-Wave Quantum: Platform Usage Surges 314% While Shares Shed Over Half Their Value

D-Wave Quantum is delivering a tale of two trajectories. On one side, the quantum computing firm’s cloud platform is humming: the number of problems submitted through Leap has topped 200 million, usage of the Advantage2 annealing system jumped 314% year-over-year, and the IDC MarketScape recently named it one of only two “Leaders” in the global quantum-computing landscape. On the other side, the stock closed at €17.86 on Wednesday, a slide of 3.12% on the day and a staggering 53.6% below the October 2025 high of €38.48.

The tension between operational momentum and market sentiment is acute. Over the past week, shares have lost 13.64%, and the year-to-date decline now stands at roughly 23%. The 50-day moving average of €20.64 and the 200-day average of €20.71 both sit well above the current price, underscoring the breadth of the sell-off.

Federal Cash for Fault-Tolerant Hardware

A $1.57 million grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation, awarded through the National Quantum Virtual Laboratory program, is the latest government vote of confidence. D-Wave is participating in the ERASE project, led by Yale University, which targets fault-tolerant quantum computing using gate-model architectures. The company will contribute through its Quantum Circuits subsidiary in New Haven, providing access to superconducting dual-rail systems that employ erasure qubits — a design that simplifies error detection and correction, one of the industry’s toughest remaining hurdles.

The grant is part of a much larger federal push. In May 2026, the Department of Commerce earmarked roughly $2 billion from the CHIPS and Science Act for quantum technologies, and D-Wave itself has a letter of intent for up to $100 million from that pool. Such backing reinforces the company’s role in the national quantum strategy, even as near-term stock performance disappoints.

Technical Gauges Flash Warning Signs

The stock’s relative strength index on a 14-day basis has fallen to 39.3, edging toward oversold territory but without a clear bottom in sight. Annualized volatility over the past 30 trading days stands at nearly 89%, a figure that captures the market’s jitters. D-Wave is not alone in this pain: peers IonQ and Rigetti have suffered similar pullbacks as investors rotate out of quantum and AI names broadly.

Analyst Targets Versus Reality

Despite the sell-off, analyst consensus still pegs a price target of roughly $40 per share, which at current exchange rates translates to about €35.06 — implying potential upside of over 90% from Tuesday’s close of €18.43. That kind of gap between street forecasts and market price highlights the extreme uncertainty. On a 12-month basis, D-Wave shares are still up 34.76%, but that masks a deep trough: the stock now trades closer to its 52-week low of €11.12 than to its peak, with a market capitalization of €7.30 billion.

A Dual-Quantum Bet Takes Shape

D-Wave’s strategy is evolving from pure annealing into a two-pronged approach. The Advantage2 system, accessed via the Leap cloud, is already delivering strong adoption in logistics and manufacturing optimization, while the Stride hybrid solver saw usage climb 114% in six months. Meanwhile, the company is pushing into gate-model quantum computing with an eye on fault tolerance. Its roadmap calls for a dual-rail system with 17 physical qubits to be delivered this year, followed by a gate-model system with ten logical qubits by 2030 and 100 by 2032. The annealing side is also getting a boost: the upcoming Advantage3 system is expected to pack 100,000 qubits.

For a company that has graduated from garage startup to institutional infrastructure provider, the challenge now is translating operational milestones and government endorsements into sustainable revenue growth.
