D-Wave Quantum Navigates a Quarter of Contrasts as Legacy Sales Wane and Service Bookings Surge 500%

D-Wave Quantum’s first-quarter results tell two very different stories at the same time. Headline revenue fell off a cliff—dropping to just $2.9 million from $15.1 million a year ago, as a prior?period one?off system sale vanished from the comparison. Yet beneath that top?line slump, the quantum computing company saw its backlog of performance obligations explode by more than 500% to $42 million, signaling that customers are flocking to its new subscription?based offerings.
The mixed picture extends to the bottom line. D-Wave posted a net loss of $18.4 million, or $0.05 per share, which came in narrower than analysts had anticipated. The improvement came even as operating costs more than doubled to $56.5 million, driven by heavy investment in research and development. A key cushion: cash and equivalents stood at roughly $588 million at quarter?end, nearly double the level a year earlier. CFO John Markovich said the war chest fully funds the company’s path to profitability.
Management is leaning hard into a “Quantum Computing as a Service” model, a recurring?revenue approach designed to smooth out the volatility inherent in hardware deals. To accelerate that pivot, D?Wave recently completed its $550 million acquisition of Quantum Circuits, a move aimed at speeding the commercialization of error?corrected gate?model systems. The company is also physically consolidating operations: it plans to relocate its headquarters to Boca Raton, Florida.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?
On Wall Street, analysts have tweaked their price targets while maintaining bullish stances. Mizuho lowered its target to $29, Canaccord Genuity cut to $41, and Needham held at $40—all with buy ratings. The optimism is pinned partly on early traction for cloud?based quantum services, which the experts say is already generating meaningful demand.
Investors, however, have shown more hesitation. The stock fell roughly 2% on the day to €17.85, extending a year?to?date decline of about 25%. Although the shares have rallied over the past month, they continue to trade below the 200?day moving average, a technical level watched closely by traders.
Looking ahead, D?Wave plans to deliver at least two complete systems this year, and the product roadmap calls for a new platform by the end of 2026. Further out, the company aims to unveil a system with 100 logical qubits by 2032. Management expects the second half of the fiscal year to bring faster conversion of the order book into recognized revenue.
The company will offer a deeper look at its strategy and milestones on June 1, when it hosts an investor day in New York. All eyes will be on how quickly the subscription shift can close the gap left by the disappearing one?off hardware sales.
