D-Wave Quantum: A Strategic Push Meets Market Skepticism

Despite 179% revenue growth and a $32.8M order backlog, D-Wave's stock lags. Analysts see a $40 median target, but Q4 results missed estimates.

While D-Wave Quantum Inc. is making significant operational strides, its share price continues to tell a different story. A growing chasm has emerged between the company's strategic execution and its market valuation, despite a year of substantial progress.

Wall Street's Cautious Stance Amid Operational Gains

The market's persistent selling pressure stands in contrast to the constructive view from analysts. According to recent coverage, 13 out of 16 market experts rate the stock as a "Buy," with one maintaining a "Hold" position. Notably, not a single analyst recommends selling. The median price target sits at $40, with a high target of $45 per share.

This optimism follows a fiscal 2025 that D-Wave described as one of its most successful on record. Annual revenue surged 179% to $24.6 million, supported by a robust gross margin of 83%. However, the fourth-quarter results tempered this strong annual performance. Revenue of $2.75 million, though a 19% year-over-year increase, fell 26% short of the $3.72 million analyst consensus. The company also reported a loss per share of $0.09, missing the expected loss of $0.06.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

Building a Foundation with Acquisitions and Orders

Operationally, D-Wave is actively building its technological and commercial foundation. The company has completed its acquisition of Quantum Circuits, a developer of error-corrected superconducting gate-model quantum systems. D-Wave states this technology identifies 90% of all occurring errors and achieves gate fidelities exceeding 99.9%. An eight-qubit gate-model system is already accessible to select customers, with a 17-qubit system slated for release in 2026.

Concurrently, the company's future revenue pipeline is expanding. Bookings for the first quarter of 2026 had already surpassed $32.8 million as of February 25. To fund its ongoing development, D-Wave ended 2025 with $884.5 million in liquid assets and marketable securities, providing ample runway to cover current losses and continue investment.

Leadership Moves and the Path Ahead

On March 13, Chief Financial Officer John Markovich sold 10,706 shares at an average price of $17.63. The transaction was tax-related and tied to the exercise of Restricted Stock Units. Following this sale, Markovich retains direct ownership of 1,451,427 shares.

The next significant test for the company arrives with its quarterly report, confirmed for release after market close on May 20, 2026. This update will be scrutinized for evidence that the growing order book is finally converting into substantially higher quarterly revenue. The core question remains whether these operational achievements can eventually bridge the persistent gap between corporate performance and the stock's valuation.
