D-Wave Attracts Institutional Heavyweights as Quantum Sector Volatility Persists

Institutional ownership hits 42.47% as D-Wave Quantum stock struggles near annual lows, with Q1 2026 earnings due May 12 and a $35.53 consensus price target signaling upside.

The quantum computing landscape is sending mixed signals, with D-Wave Quantum at the center of a tug-of-war between cautious retail sentiment and aggressive institutional accumulation. While the stock has struggled to hold gains following a sharp April rally, major financial players are quietly building substantial positions.

Mirae Asset Global ETFs Holdings nearly doubled its stake in the first quarter, boosting its position by 93.4% to 108,572 shares. NewEdge Advisors went even further, expanding its holdings by more than 125%. Collectively, institutional ownership now stands at an estimated 42.47% of the company, signaling that sophisticated investors see value where others see risk.

The stock itself tells a more volatile story. After surging 56% in April on the back of Nvidia’s new quantum AI models, D-Wave shares have given back much of those gains. On the latest trading day, the stock slipped 7.46% to €0.12, creeping back toward its annual low of €0.11. The broader picture remains choppy, with the stock trading at €0.14 — a daily gain of roughly 4.5% but still well below the year’s high of €0.20. The sector’s annualized volatility of nearly 97% underscores just how sensitive these names are to macro shifts.

Analyst opinions remain split. Northland Securities initiated coverage with a “Market Perform” rating and a $22 price target, acknowledging potential but favoring competitors. Mizuho trimmed its target from $40 to $31 while maintaining an “Outperform” rating, and Evercore ISI edged its target down to $42. The consensus price target across the Street sits at $35.53, implying significant upside from current levels.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave?

On the insider front, Chief People Officer Sophie Ames sold roughly 3,070 shares under a pre-arranged trading plan established in 2025. She retains approximately 643,000 shares, keeping her personal stake firmly aligned with shareholders.

The financial picture remains a study in contrasts. Revenue for fiscal 2025 surged 179% to $24.6 million, but adjusted EBITDA losses ballooned to $71.8 million. The company has also missed earnings-per-share expectations. Yet the bookings pipeline offers a counter-narrative: between January and late February 2026, D-Wave recorded $32.8 million in new business, a sharp improvement over the prior quarter.

All eyes now turn to May 12, when D-Wave reports first-quarter 2026 results. CEO Dr. Alan Baratz will present the numbers before the US market open and offer guidance for the remainder of the year. Investors will be watching closely to see whether the loss trajectory is narrowing relative to the growing order book.

D-Wave at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The company is also planning an intensive investor roadshow, with six conferences over seven weeks starting in mid-May. Appearances at Needham and TD Cowen are scheduled for late May. On the technology front, D-Wave aims to complete its first gate-model system by the end of 2026.

For now, the stock is testing technical support around $14.94, a level market watchers are monitoring closely. The divergence between institutional buying and price weakness may ultimately resolve in one direction — and the May 12 earnings report could provide the catalyst.
