In a bold move underscoring the intense competition for artificial intelligence expertise, Ubtech Robotics is launching a global search for a Chief Scientist, with a compensation package reaching up to 124 million yuan (approximately $18 million USD) annually. The company stated that this total remuneration, comprising cash, benefits, and equity, is designed to rival top-tier salaries offered by industry leaders like OpenAI and Meta. To put the figure in perspective, it is equivalent to the annual tax revenue of a mid-sized town in China.

Financial Firepower and Strategic Goals

This recruitment drive is far from an isolated effort. According to a survey from the platform Maimai, competition for AI talent has become the dominant theme of China's current spring hiring season. The proportion of job postings for AI roles has surged to 26%, a twelvefold increase from the previous year's 2.3%. Tesla, for instance, is simultaneously seeking over 80 specialists for its Optimus robot project, while Geekplus-W appointed Dr. Zhao Hao from Tsinghua University as its Chief Scientist in February.

Ubtech is backing its ambition with substantial financial resources. The company holds cash reserves of about 4.92 billion renminbi. For the 2025 fiscal year, it reported a 53% surge in total revenue to 2 billion yuan. Although it remained loss-making, its net loss narrowed by 32% to 789.8 million yuan. A standout performance came from its segment for humanoid robots over 160 centimeters tall, where revenue skyrocketed from 35.6 million yuan to 820.6 million yuan. This segment's contribution to total revenue jumped from under 3% to 41%. Management is targeting a gross margin of 40% to 43% for 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Ubtech Robotics?

The individual hired for the top scientific role will be tasked with defining Ubtech's technology strategy in humanoid robotics and embodied intelligence. Key research areas will include Vision-Language-Action models, foundational robotics models, and learning methods for manipulation and locomotion. The ultimate objective is to transition laboratory technologies into industrial manufacturing, commercial services, and household applications. Beyond this leadership position, Ubtech plans dozens of additional hires in reinforcement learning, hardware, and software development.

A National Priority with Global Implications

The strategic importance of this sector is clear at the highest levels of government. China has declared AI self-sufficiency a national priority, and robotics was explicitly highlighted as a top focus in the recent government work report delivered by Premier Li Qiang. Despite this state backing, a significant gap remains between China and Western nations like the U.S. and Europe in terms of access to first-class AI researchers. Offering top-tier compensation on par with Silicon Valley is a direct strategy to bridge that divide.

For Ubtech, the talent offensive is tightly linked to a key operational target for 2026: scaling its annual production capacity to 10,000 units. Success in this endeavor could allow the company to secure a strong early position in a market that Goldman Sachs estimates could be worth $38 billion by 2035. This would position Ubtech favorably against domestic competitors such as Unitree Robotics and AgiBot.
