Testimony has concluded in the trial of a 63-year-old man accused of a fatal shooting at a commercial laundry facility in Chester, Pennsylvania, bringing the case closer to a verdict more than two years after the incident.
Wilbert Rosado Ruiz faces two counts of first-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder following the May 22, 2024, shooting at Delaware County Linen. The attack left two brothers dead and four other people injured.
Self-Defence Claim Challenged by Evidence
During the proceedings, which wrapped up on July 15, 2026, defence lawyers argued that Ruiz acted in self-defence. However, prosecutors challenged this assertion by presenting video footage and ballistics data from the scene.
The court is now moving toward a verdict that will determine whether the employee's use of force was legally justified under the circumstances described during the trial.
UK Farmer Cleared in Peak District Shooting
The conclusion of the Ruiz testimony coincides with a significant self-defence ruling in the United Kingdom. On July 14, 2026, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced that no charges would be filed against Robert Lomas, a farmer in his early 50s who fatally shot a teenager during a burglary at his Peak District property in May 2024.
Lomas used a legally held firearm when he shot two intruders, killing one 19-year-old and injuring another. The CPS ruled the action was lawful self-defence, ending a 26-month period during which Lomas remained on bail. Three other men involved in the incident are currently facing burglary charges.
These cases underscore just how critical it is for employers to have robust safety procedures in place to prevent and respond to violent incidents. One area many businesses overlook is the risk of workplace violence and how to properly assess and document control measures. Recent Workplace Self-Defence Cases Across the US
Several other high-profile legal decisions regarding self-defence for property owners and workers have emerged in recent months:
-
Oakland Pawn Shop Intervention: In September 2025, employees at a pawn shop in Oakland, California, engaged in a gun battle with five masked suspects during an attempted robbery. Two suspects were killed and one employee was injured. The surviving suspects were subsequently charged with murder under the felony murder rule.
-
Alabama Security Guard Case: In Bessemer, Alabama, a security guard is facing murder charges following a June 15, 2026, stabbing on a charter bus that killed one person and wounded two others. While the 35-year-old guard claims he acted in self-defence, prosecutors allege the violence occurred following a personal dispute on the vehicle.
-
Michigan Retail Complex Review: Prosecutors in Oakland County are currently reviewing a July 11, 2026, shooting at the Great Lakes Crossing food court. A 22-year-old concealed pistol licence holder was released after video showed him being attacked by two individuals before he fired his weapon, killing a 20-year-old man.
Law Enforcement Use of Force Under Scrutiny
Legal standards for self-defence and justifiable force are also being examined in cases involving on-duty officers. On July 14, 2026, the Carson City District Attorney cleared a detective of wrongdoing in an August 2024 fatal shooting. The investigation determined the detective acted in justifiable self-defence after a suspect, who had previously stabbed his wife, made threatening gestures toward the officer. Although the suspect was found to be unarmed, the DA ruled the officer's perception of a threat was reasonable.
Federal authorities are also reviewing an incident in Biddeford, Maine, where an immigration enforcement officer fatally shot the driver of a moving vehicle. While officials initially characterised the car as a weaponised vehicle, the application of force is undergoing a standard review to determine if the shooting adhered to public safety protocols.
