Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world's leading battery manufacturer, has delivered a powerful set of financial results for 2025, demonstrating robust growth even as global electric vehicle sales face regional headwinds. The company's strategic diversification, particularly into energy storage systems, is proving to be a masterstroke, fueling a new and highly profitable growth engine beyond its core automotive battery business.

Profitability Soars on Operational Excellence

A standout feature of CATL's 2025 performance is its dramatic profit expansion, which significantly outpaced revenue growth. The company's net profit surged by 42% year-on-year to reach 72.2 billion RMB. This impressive leap was achieved on the back of a 17% increase in revenue, which totaled 423.7 billion RMB. Driving this disproportionate bottom-line growth is exceptional operational efficiency, reflected in a gross margin of nearly 24% for its battery segment. International operations proved especially lucrative, boasting margins exceeding 31%. This strong fundamental performance has provided solid support for the company's shares, which recently traded at 397 Yuan after gaining over eleven percent in a week, edging closer to their 52-week high.

Energy Storage Emerges as Powerhouse Segment

While CATL maintains its undisputed position as the top global power battery supplier for a ninth consecutive year, holding a 39.2% market share, its most explosive growth now comes from elsewhere. Shipments of energy storage systems skyrocketed by more than 160% compared to the previous year. This boom is directly linked to two major global trends: the soaring energy demands of new artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and the essential grid integration required for renewable energy sources.

A Global and Technological Offensive

CATL is aggressively reducing its reliance on its home market through a concerted global expansion push. The firm is currently scaling up major production facilities in Germany and Hungary, with a new plant in Indonesia scheduled to commence operations by the end of 2026. Parallel to this geographical spread, the company is making massive investments in research and development. In 2025 alone, CATL allocated 22.1 billion RMB to develop next-generation products like its ultra-fast charging Shenxing battery.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

Looking ahead to 2026, the company's agenda includes the broader commercial rollout of sodium-ion batteries for passenger vehicles and battery swap systems. This technological push is coupled with a significant expansion of its recycling capabilities. Last year, CATL processed 210,000 tons of spent batteries, recovering 24,000 tons of lithium salts from them. This holistic approach is increasingly positioning CATL as a fully integrated technology leader across the entire battery value chain.
