The global battery manufacturing leader, CATL, is making significant and methodical progress in solid-state battery development. Recent moves, including a key patent publication and a major supply chain agreement, underscore the company's systematic approach to securing its position in this next-generation technology.

Securing Critical Materials for Future Production

A cornerstone of CATL's strategy involves locking in essential raw materials well ahead of mass production. The company has entered into a multi-year supply contract with Guangdong Jiayuan Technology. Under this agreement, CATL is set to receive 626,000 tonnes of copper foil between 2026 and 2028. This material is a critical component for manufacturing both semi-solid and full solid-state batteries.

The strategic importance of this procurement move lies in securing supply chain stability. By contracting these materials years in advance, CATL aims to shield itself from potential shortages and price volatility as solid-state technology matures and moves toward commercial-scale production.

A Novel Patent Addressing Core Technical Challenges

On March 5, 2026, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a CATL patent detailing an innovative solid-state battery architecture. The design centers on a sulfide-based electrolyte paired with a cobalt-rich anode structure. A key feature is a fluorine-containing protective layer designed to form lithium fluoride upon contact with the electrolyte. This mechanism is intended to solve the fundamental issue of chemical instability that has plagued sulfide electrolytes.

In parallel with this intellectual property development, CATL has initiated pilot production of 20-Ah solid-state battery cells. The subsequent phase involves building automotive-format prototypes with a 60 Ah capacity. The company is targeting a technology readiness level of 7 or 8 by 2027, which would pave the way for limited series production.

Market Potential and Remaining Obstacles

The promise of solid-state batteries is substantial, with the potential to achieve energy densities of up to 500 Wh/kg. Such performance would be a major advantage for long-range electric vehicles and could enable new applications in electric aviation. However, a significant cost barrier remains. Currently, sulfide-based solid-state cells are estimated to cost three to five times more than conventional lithium-ion batteries.

CATL's commitment to innovation is reflected in its substantial R&D investment of approximately $2.59 billion USD in 2024. The company holds a portfolio of over 43,000 patents worldwide. Market sentiment appears positive regarding its technological lead, with its shares trading just below their 52-week high of 415.60 CNY.
