Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) is strategically diversifying its core business. The world's leading battery manufacturer has secured a pivotal agreement with Chinese parcel delivery firm STO Express, signed on March 29. This move marks a deliberate push to electrify the commercial logistics sector, creating a new demand stream beyond the passenger vehicle market.

Strategic Diversification and Financial Backdrop

Market analysts view this partnership as a structural shift for CATL. By targeting logistics networks, the company aims to reduce its reliance on the often volatile passenger electric vehicle segment and achieve a more balanced utilization of its massive production capacity. This strategic expansion is underpinned by robust financial results. For the 2025 fiscal year, CATL reported annual revenue of 423.7 billion yuan, with a net profit reaching 72.2 billion yuan. The firm has also solidified its dominant position, now holding a 39.2% global market share in traction batteries, thereby widening its lead over competitors.

Electrifying the Last Mile: Technology and Implementation

The heart of the collaboration focuses on the large-scale electrification of STO Express's delivery fleet. The initiative extends beyond merely supplying batteries to encompass the joint development of supporting infrastructure. This includes charging and battery-swapping stations, alongside comprehensive systems for managing the entire battery lifecycle—from initial deployment through to recycling.

To power this demanding application, CATL will leverage its second-generation Shenxing battery technology. The system boasts a peak power output of 1.3 megawatts and supports an ultra-fast charging rate capable of adding approximately 2.5 kilometers of range per second. In practical terms, this enables a charge from 10% to 70% state-of-charge in just five minutes—a critical advantage for logistics vehicles operating under continuous, high-intensity use cycles where downtime must be minimized.

Market Reception and Investor Activity

The market has responded positively to CATL's broader strategy. Trading on the Hong Kong exchange, the company's shares currently stand approximately 22% above their annual low, which was recorded on March 4. Furthermore, mainland Chinese investors have been increasing their exposure, having recently raised their aggregate holding in CATL's Hong Kong-listed shares to 3.72%.

This STO Express deal represents a tangible step in CATL's plan to build a significant presence in the commercial logistics sector, using its technological edge to drive electrification in a new and demanding field.
