Cardano Reclaims Top-Tier Status Amid Institutional Accumulation

Cardano surges back into crypto's top 10 after a 20% rally, driven by whale accumulation. However, low liquidity and overvaluation risks challenge the rally's sustainability.

Cardano has surged back into the elite group of the ten largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. This follows a dramatic price increase of nearly 20% over a 48-hour period, which saw ADA displace Bitcoin Cash from its position. The move signals a potential reversal for the blockchain platform after an extended period of subdued performance.

Smart Money Builds Positions Through Downturn

A significant driver behind this recovery appears to be sustained accumulation by major investors. On-chain analytics from Santiment reveal a telling pattern: digital wallets holding between 100,000 and 100 million ADA tokens—often categorized as "Sharks" and "Whales"—have aggressively added to their holdings over the last six months. This cohort has absorbed approximately 819.4 million ADA during this timeframe, increasing their collective share of the total supply from 66.84% to 68.44%.

Notably, these large-scale investors continued their buying activity consistently, even as Cardano's price declined. This behavior, where sophisticated "smart money" addresses systematically expand their positions while smaller retail investors sell, is frequently viewed as a classic indicator that a market bottom is forming.

Rally Faces Liquidity and Valuation Hurdles

Despite the positive price action and renewed top-10 ranking, several cautionary metrics persist. The 30-day Market Value to Realized Value (MVRV) ratio currently sits at +6.8%, suggesting the asset may be in a state of "mild overvaluation." With many holders now in profit, the conditions are ripe for potential selling pressure as investors look to realize gains.

A more pressing concern is liquidity. Spot trading volume for ADA has plummeted by 45% to 55%. For a price rally to be considered sustainable, it typically requires robust trading volume and high liquidity, both of which are conspicuously absent at present. This divergence contributes to a continued split in sentiment among everyday traders.

Institutional Validation Gains Traction

Adding to the narrative of growing institutional interest, Grayscale Investments adjusted the composition of its Smart Contract Platform Select Capped Index Fund on February 26. The investment firm raised Cardano's weighting within the fund to 20.2%, establishing ADA as the third-largest holding. This rebalancing acts as a strong signal of increasing institutional acceptance, even though the direct capital inflow from such a fund adjustment is typically minimal.

While Cardano's re-entry into the cryptocurrency top 10 is a significant milestone, its ability to maintain this position is not guaranteed. The key question is whether the substantial accumulation by large holders will be followed by renewed momentum and participation from the broader retail market. The sharp decline in overall trading volume casts doubt on this prospect, setting the stage for a critical test of the rally's durability.
