Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has launched a comprehensive technological offensive, introducing a suite of new products and infrastructure plans. The announcements, made at a "Disruptive Technology" event, come at a pivotal moment for the automaker as it navigates a recent sales slowdown and intensifies its international expansion strategy.

A New Flagship SUV and Enhanced Battery Tech

Leading the product announcements was the reveal of the Great Tang, a new flagship electric SUV. The vehicle measures over 5.3 meters in length with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm, featuring a seven-seat interior arranged in a 2+2+3 layout. Initial offerings will include single- and dual-motor configurations, with the latter generating a combined 585 kW of power. It will be equipped with a second-generation Blade Battery and a dual-chamber air suspension system, boasting a range of up to 950 kilometers according to the CLTC testing cycle.

The centerpiece of the technological update is the second-generation Blade Battery. BYD claims the new battery can charge from 10% to 97% in approximately nine minutes under standard conditions. The system-wide energy density is reported to be between 190 and 210 Wh/kg, marking a noticeable improvement over the previous version. Performance in cold climates has also been targeted for enhancement; after storage at -30 degrees Celsius, a charge from 20% to 97% is said to take about 12 minutes.

Megawatt Charging and Ambitious Infrastructure Goals

To complement the new battery, BYD launched its "Megawatt Flash Charging 2.0" system. This technology, based on a 1,000-volt architecture and capable of handling up to 1,500 amperes, delivers a peak charging power of up to 1,500 kW per connection.

The company outlined an aggressive infrastructure rollout plan to support this technology. BYD aims to establish 20,000 flash-charging stations across China by the end of 2026. Of these, 18,000 are planned for urban locations, to be built in cooperation with existing charging network operators, with an additional 2,000 stations slated for highways. The automaker also indicated the potential for expanding this ultra-fast charging network into international markets by late 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Navigating Domestic Headwinds Through Global Growth

This technological push unfolds against a backdrop of increasing market challenges. BYD reported a significant year-on-year sales decline of approximately 41% for February. The company cites intense price competition in China, the phasing out of certain EV subsidies, and cooling consumer demand as contributing pressures.

In response to these domestic headwinds, BYD is placing greater emphasis on its overseas business. The company has set an export target of 1.3 million vehicles for 2026, a substantial increase from the previous year. This international growth strategy is to be supported by expanding production at global manufacturing sites and the subsequent worldwide deployment of its proprietary flash-charging network, with a focus on markets including Europe and the ASEAN region.
