The Chinese automaker has quietly pivoted from its all-electric script in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, BYD is now rolling out its fifth-generation Dual-Mode hybrid system, a technology that marries battery power with a petrol engine. The first model to carry the setup is the M6 DM, a multi-purpose van built exclusively for international markets and absent from BYD’s domestic lineup in China.

That van plugs a critical gap. Indonesia’s electric-vehicle penetration soared from less than 1% in 2022 to around 20% in the first quarter of this year, yet the archipelago’s sparse charging network remains a persistent headache for pure battery cars. BYD’s hybrid can cover up to 2,100 kilometres on a full tank and a full charge, with consumption pegged at 2.9 litres per 100 kilometres when the battery is low. “Customers no longer have to choose between city commutes and long-distance trips,” said Eagle Zhao, a BYD manager, of the appeal for local drivers.

The company has been on a tear in Indonesia since it officially began passenger-car sales there in January 2024. Nearly 90,000 BYD new-energy vehicles now ply the country’s roads. The hybrid push is a pragmatic hedge: it leverages government incentives while sidestepping the infrastructure bottleneck that holds back pure battery-electric adoption in far-flung regions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

That same duality is playing out across BYD’s global expansion. In Australia, the carmaker plans to launch four new or refreshed products in the second half of 2026, including two entirely new models — the M9 people mover and the Ti7 SUV. The local lineup has ballooned from four to 11 models in just two years. In Europe, BYD is pivoting toward heavy commercial vehicles. Bar?? Akyalç?m, head of the company’s European e-truck business, told a Handelsblatt conference in Munich that BYD aims to supply fleet operators with not just trucks but also energy storage and management solutions, addressing the grid constraints that often stall electrification.

The push abroad comes at a critical juncture. International deliveries hit a record roughly 135,000 vehicles in April 2026, a 70% surge year-on-year. That overseas momentum is the bright spot in an otherwise strained picture. In China, where price wars have eroded margins, BYD’s first-quarter profit tumbled 55.4% to 4.1 billion yuan. The domestic market remains the company’s anchor, but it is also the source of the heaviest pressure on earnings.

Regulatory and strategic challenges are mounting elsewhere, too. In Hungary, where BYD is building a large production plant, Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s government is pushing for strict local labour and environmental standards. BYD has instructed its contractors to comply fully. Meanwhile, the group is reportedly exploring an entry into Formula One — talks have been held with Alpine’s team and interest expressed in a Renault engine facility in France. Executive Vice President Stella Li has confirmed discussions with F1 management, though no details have been announced.

On the Hong Kong stock exchange, BYD’s shares have felt the tension between global ambition and domestic weakness. The stock closed at HK$90.65, down 3.4% on the day. The market is now watching two metrics closely: how fast the M6 DM and its hybrid siblings can scale in Indonesia, and whether overseas margins can outpace the squeeze in China. For BYD, the answer will determine whether its global sprint can truly cushion the blow from home.
