BYD Strengthens European Transit Presence with Italian Bus Deployment

BYD expands in Europe as 34 new electric buses, featuring the innovative Cell-to-Chassis battery design, begin service in Verona, Italy.

The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has marked a significant operational and technological milestone in Europe. A new fleet of its electric buses has commenced service in the Italian city of Verona, reinforcing the company's standing in the continent's public transport sector.

A Strategic European Foothold

This delivery represents another strategic component in BYD's expansion across Europe. The commercial vehicle segment is becoming an increasingly vital growth area as numerous municipalities transition their public transit fleets to zero-emission powertrains. The successful contract with Verona underscores BYD's competitive strength in a market often defined by public tenders.

Verona's New Electric Fleet

A total of 34 new electric buses have officially entered operation with the local transport operator, Azienda Trasporti Verona (ATV). The order comprises two distinct models: the K9UD and the eBUS B12. The deployment is particularly notable for featuring the Italian market debut of the B12 model.

Debut of Integrated Battery Technology

The introduction of the B12 model brings a key technical innovation to Italy's roads. Its design utilizes a "Cell-to-Chassis" architecture, where the battery pack is fully integrated into the vehicle's frame, acting as a structural component rather than a mere add-on. This approach employs BYD's proprietary Blade Battery technology based on Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, allowing for more efficient use of space. Each bus is equipped with a 416 kWh battery capacity and, similar to the K9UD model, can accommodate over 80 passengers.

A Technical Benchmark for Future Growth

The successful implementation of this new platform technology in Italy establishes a crucial technical reference point for BYD's future European projects. The company has announced plans to gradually transition its future European vehicle series to this integrated battery structure. The Verona project therefore serves as a practical demonstration for other transit authorities considering similar fleet upgrades.
