Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has encountered a challenging start to the new year, with investor sentiment turning cautious following the release of its January 2026 delivery figures. The company's Hong Kong-listed shares declined to a five-week low in response to the report.

The data reveals a significant slowdown. BYD sold a total of 210,051 new energy vehicles in January. This represents a substantial year-on-year contraction of 30.1%. Sales of passenger vehicles, which form the core of its business, fell to 205,518 units, marking a 30.7% decrease compared to January 2025. The sequential decline from December 2025 was even more pronounced, with passenger vehicle deliveries plummeting by 50.4%.

A notable shift occurred within the sales mix. While all segments declined, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) experienced a steeper drop of 33.6%. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw a comparatively softer decline of 28.5%, improving their proportion of the total sales structure. Mirroring the sales trend, the company's production output also contracted, falling 29.1% versus the same month last year.

International Operations Provide a Counterbalance

Amid the broad domestic weakness, BYD's overseas business continues to demonstrate robust growth, serving as a key positive. For the third consecutive month, the company's international passenger vehicle sales exceeded 100,000 units. On an annual basis, overseas sales of passenger vehicles and pickups surged by 43.3%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

One market standout was Australia, where BYD achieved a milestone in January by becoming the top-selling electric vehicle brand for the first time, with 2,779 units sold.

Context and Outlook

Analysts point to seasonal factors, including the timing of the Chinese New Year holiday, which traditionally influences consumer purchasing patterns, as a partial explanation for the soft January performance. Furthermore, intense competition within China's crowded EV market continues to pressure automakers.

The company's international expansion remains a critical growth driver. As BYD moves into February, market observers will be watching to see if it can recover from this sluggish annual opening and regain its domestic momentum.
