BYD Seeks a Seat at Europe's Table Amid Shifting Trade Winds

The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has formally applied for membership in the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), a strategic move to gain direct influence in Brussels as the threat of punitive EU tariffs looms. If successful, this would mark an unprecedented inclusion of a Chinese automaker within the powerful lobby group, fundamentally altering the dynamics of Europe's automotive policy discussions.

This political maneuver is timed alongside a significant ramp-up in BYD's local European production, a direct counter to trade barriers. The company initiated trial production at its new plant in Szeged, Hungary, in late January, with series production slated to begin in the second quarter of 2026. This facility, with an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles, will be complemented by another factory in Turkey set to open by year's end. Crucially, vehicles manufactured within these locations will circumvent the EU's additional import duties, which currently stand at 17% on top of the standard 10% levy.

Europe has become an indispensable growth pillar for BYD, helping to counter a pronounced slowdown in its home market. The company's overseas sales accounted for 40% of its total volume in the first quarter. In March alone, BYD exported over 120,000 vehicles, a staggering 65% increase year-over-year. Management has responded by raising its full-year export target to 1.5 million units. The UK market has been a particular bright spot, where the brand sold over 15,000 vehicles in March, securing nearly a 4% share of the electrified vehicle segment. On the continent, BYD even outsold Tesla in new registrations for the second consecutive month in February.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

However, this international charge is necessary to offset a persistent domestic slump. In China, BYD's sales fell by approximately 20% in March to just over 300,000 vehicles, marking the seventh consecutive monthly decline. Sales of pure electric vehicles plummeted by a quarter in Q1, a weakness that temporarily cost BYD its global top-seller crown to Tesla for the quarter. Despite this, BYD remains China's largest automaker with a 22.8% market share.

The company is also using Europe as a launchpad for new technology and a push into the premium segment. The Denza Z9 GT, a premium model priced at around €115,000, is arriving in European markets equipped with BYD's new "Flash Charging" technology. This system is part of a massive infrastructure rollout, with plans to install it at 6,000 planned charging stations overseas, initially having been deployed at thousands of fast-food outlets in China.

All eyes now turn to Shenzhen, where BYD's board will present its first-quarter financial results on April 28, 2026. The report will reveal the extent to which robust international deliveries of approximately 700,500 vehicles globally for Q1 have compensated for the softer home market dynamics. Analyst sentiment ahead of the release is cautiously optimistic. Citigroup maintains a buy rating with a price target of HK$174 for the Hong Kong-listed shares, while Daiwa Securities also recommends a buy, albeit after a slight reduction of its target to HK$130, citing strong international shipments. A successful lobbying bid in Brussels could provide a concrete political foundation for this guarded confidence.
