BYD crossed the 17-million mark for cumulative New Energy Vehicle production last week, with the latest million rolling off assembly lines in just 82 days — a notable acceleration from the 120 days needed for the previous million. The milestone vehicle, a Seal 08 sedan equipped with the second-generation Blade battery and fast-charging technology, underscores how rapidly the Chinese manufacturer is scaling. Yet for all the production prowess, the stock remains stuck near 9.42 euros, down roughly 14% year-to-date and languishing below both its 50- and 200-day moving averages.

The company is pulling out all the stops to build brand recognition beyond China. On June 13, a fleet of Denza Z9GT vehicles departed Rome on a 15,000-kilometer, 11-country roadshow that is scheduled to reach Hong Kong around July 25. BYD is using the marathon drive to showcase the flagship model from its Denza premium brand, which carries the new Blade Battery 2.0 and claims a range of up to 1,036 kilometers per charge. The headline feature: the ability to add more than 900 kilometers of range in just nine minutes of charging — a class-leading figure for a vehicle of its size.

Meanwhile, BYD is also doubling down on smaller vehicles to crack new markets. On July 28, it will launch the "Racco" micro-car in Japan, directly challenging the country’s entrenched K-Car segment dominated by Suzuki and Nissan. Measuring just 3,395 millimeters, the electric city car will be offered with either a 22.4 kWh or a 35.84 kWh battery, the larger version delivering up to 320 kilometers under Japan’s WLTC cycle. Priced at around $17,700, it takes on the Nissan Sakura with 50 kW DC charging. BYD has enlisted actress Alice Hirose for a broad advertising campaign to boost awareness.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The Atto 2 — sold as the Yuan Up in China — is being readied for a more ambitious global rollout. Recent prototype sightings point to a switch to rear-wheel drive and a redesigned chassis layout, while the charging port has moved from the front-right to the rear-left. Analysts see the overhaul as preparation for a wider international launch in the second half of 2026, aiming for improved driving dynamics and greater platform commonality across the model range.

The product offensive comes at a time when exports are surging. In June, BYD sold 175,349 vehicles abroad, a jump of 94.73% year-on-year, with overseas sales accounting for 43.46% of monthly volume. For the first half as a whole, export deliveries reached 471,091 units, up 82.5%, pushing the share of foreign sales to 42.5% of total deliveries. This international momentum is helping offset a stubborn domestic slowdown: China sales slumped roughly 36% in January and February, underscoring the importance of markets from Europe to Southeast Asia.

But the market has been slower to acknowledge this operational momentum. At 9.42 euros, BYD’s stock sits 36.36% below its 52-week high of 14.80 euros hit in July last year, although it has clawed back 17.32% from the year’s low of 8.03 euros touched on June 30. The relative strength index of 52.6 points to neutral territory, giving no clear directional signal. The shares trade 11.81% beneath the 200-day average of 10.68 euros and also lag the 50-day line at 9.72 euros.

For the remainder of the year, much depends on whether regulatory conditions in Europe and the United States ease or tighten further for Chinese electric-vehicle makers. The Denza roadshow’s arrival in Hong Kong around July 25 will keep the brand in the headlines, but investors so far are keeping their hands off the wheel until the policy picture becomes clearer.
