BYD's Hong Kong shares trade near 52-week lows even as premium brand Fang Cheng Bao sales surge 220% and autonomous driving data pipeline grows. Retooling for new battery tech adds delivery delays.

BYD is firing on multiple operational cylinders even as its Hong Kong-listed shares trade near 52-week troughs. The Chinese electric-vehicle giant is simultaneously scaling its premium brand, feeding a vast autonomous-driving data pipeline, and exploring high-profile expansion moves. Yet the stock’s recent slide to 91.60 Hong Kong dollars — just 3.5 percent above the February low of around 88.50 HKD — suggests investors remain focused on the brutal price war at home.

The company’s “God’s Eye” intelligent driving system now collects an extraordinary 190 million kilometres of data daily from nearly three million vehicles equipped with driver-assistance features. That real-world information flows into cloud simulations, allowing BYD to update its driving algorithms every three days. The premium version of the system remains exclusive to the Yangwang luxury marque, but the broader roll-out will be detailed at a dedicated strategy event on May 28. The event is expected to cover both software and hardware integration for autonomous driving.

Meanwhile, BYD’s newer premium brand, Fang Cheng Bao, this week reached a cumulative sales milestone of 400,000 vehicles. The 150,000th unit of the Tai 7 SUV — itself a Fang Cheng Bao model — marked the milestone. In April alone, the brand delivered roughly 29,200 vehicles, a 190 percent jump year-on-year, while first-four-month sales of around 93,700 units represented a 220 percent increase.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

That blistering growth, however, comes with an operational headache. BYD is currently retooling its assembly lines to accommodate the second generation of its Blade battery technology. The switchover has extended delivery lead times for several core models, forcing the company to juggle technology upgrades with output targets.

On the strategic front, vice-chairwoman Stella Li has held an initial meeting with former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner to discuss a potential Formula 1 entry — a move that would dramatically boost global brand recognition. In Europe, BYD is reportedly in talks to buy unused production capacity from Stellantis and other manufacturers, aiming to cut logistics costs and sidestep tariff risks. The company is also using its own cargo ships for exports; the “BYD Shenzhen” recently delivered nearly 1,800 vehicles to Mexico.

Hardware advancements continue apace. First images of the “Great Han” flagship sedan show a claimed range of about 1,000 kilometres with a five-minute fast charge. Independent testing by Battery X Metals also suggests that recalibrating battery cells could add up to 84 kilometres to the range of volume models such as the Seal.

At the Hong Kong bourse, the stock rose 1.16 percent on Friday to close at 91.60 HKD, still within a 52-week range of 88.50 to 159.27 HKD. Macquarie maintains a neutral rating with a 91 HKD target, warning that a break below the chart support at 90 HKD could trigger further selling toward the year’s lows. The pressing timeline includes a dividend ex-date on June 11 and half-year results due August 28 — both potential catalysts for a shift in sentiment.
