BYD turned the final week of May into a showcase for its expanding hybrid lineup and advanced driver-assistance ambitions, unveiling three new plug-in models and a significant update to its “God’s Eye” system. The flurry of launches underscores the Shenzhen-based automaker’s strategy to defend its roughly 40% share of China’s new-energy vehicle market through a combination of class-leading range and increasingly intelligent driving features.

The Song Ultra DM-i, which debuted on May 28, is the most prominent of the newcomers. Using BYD’s fifth-generation Dual-Mode hybrid technology, it pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 175 kW electric motor. Buyers can choose between a 26.6 kWh battery offering 205 kilometres of electric-only range or a 38 kWh unit that stretches that figure to 310 kilometres. The SUV measures 4,850 mm in length with a 2,840 mm wheelbase and features a minimalist cockpit dominated by a 15.6-inch infotainment screen – the same layout as the all-electric Song Ultra that launched in March. That EV version, priced between 151,900 and 179,900 yuan, racked up over 61,000 sales in its first month.

Two days earlier, on May 26, BYD rolled out the 2026 Sealion 06 DM-i with a starting price of 129,900 yuan and a claimed combined range of 1,845 kilometres. That was followed on May 28 by the Qin L DM-i and the Seal 06 DM-i, both showcased in Xi’an. These medium-sized sedans boast a petrol engine with a thermal efficiency of 46.06% – an industry record – and a combined range of up to 2,100 kilometres on a full tank and fully charged battery. Official fuel consumption falls to just 2.9 litres per 100 kilometres even with the battery depleted. Electric-only range is either 80 or 120 kilometres depending on the battery option. Prices for the Qin L and Seal 06 start at the equivalent of roughly $13,770 and top out at around $19,300. The higher-powered variant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Alongside the product launches, BYD held a strategy briefing on intelligent driving. The centrepiece is “God’s Eye,” its advanced driver-assistance system. The latest version 5.0, fitted as standard or optional on the Song Ultra DM-i, uses reinforcement learning and supports LiDAR via a total of 27 sensors. BYD claims the system is already active in more than 60 models and nearly 3 million vehicles. The severe accident rate – measured by airbag deployments per 10 million kilometres – is one-sixth that of human drivers. The fleet generates over 190 million kilometres of driving data daily, and algorithms are updated every three days. Adoption figures are striking: more than half of drivers actively use navigation-guided driving, while the parking-assist function has an 86% utilisation rate and cuts parking damage to about one-fiftieth of the human benchmark.

The market reaction to the barrage of news was measured. BYD’s Hong Kong-listed H-shares (ticker 1211) closed at HK$90.70 on May 27, roughly 3% below the previous day’s close of HK$93.65. A conspicuous block trade of 55,700 shares at HK$90.50 was recorded on the eve of the Xi’an event, while the stock touched an intraday low of HK$90.15 – a 3.4% decline. The subdued response may reflect lingering concerns about recent profit pressure, but major brokerages remain bullish on the outlook.

Goldman Sachs and Citigroup both expect a recovery phase to begin in the second quarter of 2026. Citigroup forecasts core profit of around 11.30 billion yuan for the current quarter, supported by more stable domestic pricing and higher-margin new models. The fifth-generation hybrid platform is seen as the key to maintaining BYD’s competitive edge at home, while the company continues to push abroad. Its factory in Camaçari, Brazil, has started mass production with an initial annual capacity of 150,000 units, and plans call for an eventual ramp-up to 600,000 vehicles per year.

BYD’s rapid cadence of launches – three hybrid models in as many days – highlights the intensity of competition in China’s new-energy vehicle market. By combining record-breaking hybrid efficiency with a rich sensor suite and over-the-air software updates, the automaker is betting that range and smarts, rather than price alone, will carry it through the current profit trough and into its next phase of growth.
