The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is navigating a complex moment in its global expansion. While launching a high-profile luxury offensive in Europe, the company faces mounting scrutiny over labor practices at its flagship Hungarian factory, casting a shadow over its ambitious growth targets.

At the heart of the controversy is BYD's $6 billion plant under construction in Szeged, Hungary. The facility, designed for an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles, is central to the automaker's European strategy. However, the New York-based labor rights organization China Labor Watch (CLW) has filed complaints with the EU Commission, the European Parliament, and the Hungarian Human Rights Commission. The allegations, documented from Chinese migrant workers on the site, include excessive recruitment fees constituting debt bondage, entry on business visas instead of proper work permits, and a lack of access to medical care following workplace accidents. BYD has not yet publicly commented. This pattern is not isolated; similar accusations, including potential human trafficking, emerged last year at the company's facility in Camaçari, Brazil.

These reputational challenges arrive as BYD aggressively courts the European premium market. On April 8, the company unveiled its Denza Z9GT at the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris, a direct challenge to models like the Porsche Taycan and Mercedes EQS. The shooting brake, featuring a 122-kWh Blade battery and over 960 horsepower, boasts acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under three seconds. A key technological selling point is its "FLASH Charging" system, claiming a charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and to 97% in nine. For the European launch, BYD has enlisted former James Bond actor Daniel Craig as a brand ambassador, marking Denza's first global celebrity partnership. Practically, however, Europe's current charging infrastructure lacks widespread compatibility with such high power levels.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The luxury push coincides with record-breaking performance in other key international markets. In the first quarter of 2026, BYD registered 21,337 vehicles in the United Kingdom, its best quarterly result ever in that market. March sales alone surged 134% year-over-year, giving BYD an 11% share of combined BEV and PHEV registrations. In Thailand, the company achieved a symbolic milestone at the Bangkok International Motor Show, securing 17,354 orders versus 15,750 for longtime market leader Toyota.

This international momentum is strategically critical as BYD's home market weakens. In March, domestic sales in China fell 20.5% to 300,222 vehicles, largely due to the expiration of a full purchase tax exemption for EVs at the end of 2025. Overseas deliveries provided a powerful counterbalance, jumping 65% to 120,083 units in the same month. For the entire quarter, BYD exported 321,165 vehicles and subsequently raised its 2026 export target from 1.3 million to 1.5 million units. CEO Wang Chuanfu told analysts that rising oil prices are lifting overseas demand to new levels, with markets like Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines seeing sales rates double. Exports now account for 40% of BYD's total sales.

Financially, the company's position is mixed. While 2025 revenue grew to 804 billion yuan, net profit declined by nearly 20%. The stock trades in Hong Kong at around HKD 104.70, well below its 52-week high of HKD 159.27. Analyst sentiment is divided: BOCOM International and China Merchants Securities recommend a Buy, while Bank of China maintains a Sell rating.

The coming weeks will be pivotal. The full publication of the CLW report could determine whether the labor allegations escalate into regulatory action from Brussels or Ottawa. Meanwhile, the success of its European luxury foray and the ramp-up of production at new plants in Hungary and Brazil are central to achieving its heightened export goals. For the automaker that dethroned Tesla as the world's largest EV maker in 2025, managing reputational risk while executing a high-stakes global expansion has become its defining challenge.
