Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is implementing a nuanced product strategy, continuing to offer its first-generation Blade Battery alongside its newly launched second-generation version. This dual-track approach is designed to provide pricing flexibility and cater to a broader spectrum of market segments with a more diversified model lineup.

A Critical Juncture for Sales

This strategic move comes at a pivotal moment for the automaker. BYD has reported a decline in vehicle sales during the first two months of the year, reflecting broader softness in the domestic Chinese EV market. Company leadership is now banking on its new charging technologies and adaptable pricing to stimulate a recovery starting in the second quarter.

The success of this plan is seen as heavily contingent on two key factors: the speed at which the supporting charging infrastructure can be rolled out and how consumers respond to the adjusted pricing of the new vehicle models equipped with the latest technology.

Unveiling Next-Generation Charging Capabilities

Officially unveiled on March 5, the second-generation Blade Battery represents a significant leap in charging speed. The technology enables a charge from 10% to 97% state of charge in just nine minutes. Initially, ten BYD models will be equipped with this advanced battery.

Li Yunfei, the head of BYD's branding and public relations department, indicated that the pricing for these models will be adjusted to reflect the new manufacturing costs associated with the technology.

Infrastructure Built for Scale

To commercially support this rapid-charging technology, BYD is promoting a streamlined infrastructure model tailored for urban deployment. Its new public charging stations require only three standard parking spaces and are designed to avoid costly grid upgrades or extensive foundational work. The company has an ambitious plan to install 20,000 of these fast-charging points by the end of 2026.
