BYD launches a new Atto 3 with ultra-fast charging to revive domestic sales, as it leans on surging exports and new models like the FORMULA coupe ahead of Q1 earnings.

Ahead of a critical earnings report, BYD is deploying its most advanced technology in a bid to reverse a persistent slump in its home market. The Chinese electric vehicle giant will unveil the third-generation Atto 3 crossover at the Beijing Auto Show this Friday, featuring a charging system the company hopes will be a game-changer. The new battery can reach a 70% charge in just five minutes, with a near-full charge taking only nine. Even in extreme cold, the process is slowed by a mere three minutes.

This technological push comes as the Atto 3, known domestically as the Yuan Plus, desperately needs a revival. First-quarter deliveries of the model collapsed by 73% year-over-year to just 10,675 units. The updated version aims to halt that decline with not only faster charging but also a longer wheelbase and a switch to rear-wheel drive. Depending on the battery option, its range extends to up to 630 kilometers under China's CLTC testing standard.

The charging breakthrough is central to BYD's broader strategy as domestic sales weaken. In March, the company delivered approximately 300,000 EVs. While that marked a 58% increase from February, it represented a year-on-year decline of roughly 20%—the seventh consecutive month of such drops. To counter this pressure, BYD is aggressively pursuing international growth. First-quarter exports surpassed 321,000 vehicles, prompting management to raise its 2026 export target to 1.5 million units.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Alongside the Atto 3, BYD's performance sub-brand Fangchengbao will take center stage in Beijing with the debut of its new FORMULA coupe on April 24. The sub-brand is on a tear, selling nearly 65,000 vehicles in Q1 2026—a staggering 236% increase from the prior year. The company has also already launched the refreshed Sealion 05, available as both a plug-in hybrid and a pure EV. The hybrid variant, using BYD's fifth-generation DM technology, claims a fuel consumption of 3.1 liters per 100 kilometers with an empty battery and a combined range of up to 2,105 km. Pricing starts at around €12,500 for the hybrid and €15,300 for the electric version.

Supporting its new technology, BYD plans a massive global rollout of its proprietary charging infrastructure, aiming to have 20,000 of these ultra-fast charging stations operational worldwide by year's end. The luxury Denza Z9 GT will be the first model to bring this system to Europe, positioning BYD directly against established premium brands.

Investors will soon get a clearer financial picture of how the domestic slowdown is impacting the bottom line. BYD's board is set to meet in Shenzhen on April 28 to approve the unaudited first-quarter 2026 results. The earnings will reveal the cost of recent price wars and whether the company's international expansion and product offensive are enough to stabilize its trajectory.
