The US Department of Defense has added Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD to a roster of firms it alleges maintain ties to China's military. This classification arrives as the rapidly expanding automaker is significantly increasing its international footprint.

On Saturday, the Pentagon revised its official "List of Chinese Military Companies," a congressional mandate that identifies businesses believed to have direct or indirect connections to the People's Liberation Army and that operate within the United States. BYD appears on this list for the first time, alongside several other Chinese entities.

Following its release, the document was briefly withdrawn before being republished without changes. Inclusion on this list carries potentially serious implications, potentially hindering a company's access to US investment and complicating its ability to secure contracts.

Global Ambitions Meet Geopolitical Friction

The timing of the listing is particularly notable given BYD's concurrent aggressive overseas expansion strategy. The company aims to boost foreign sales in response to a challenging domestic market, with plans to grow its dealer network in Germany and establish smaller regional offices across Japan.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

In a move highlighting its commercial ambitions, BYD announced a multi-year partnership with football club Manchester City on the same day as the Pentagon's update. As the Premier League team's official vehicle partner, BYD will supply electric vehicles and install charging and energy storage systems at the club's training academy.

This creates a contradictory landscape for BYD's global operations. While the company secures high-profile partnerships and extends its commercial reach, the new designation introduces additional risk for international investors and partners. Pressure on management to successfully penetrate foreign markets is further intensified by weak domestic sales figures reported for January.
