BYD Doubles Down on Luxury and Speed: Denza Charity, F1 Talks, and a Flurry of New Models

BYD auctions Denza Z9 GT for $811K, eyes Formula 1 entry, and launches premium SUVs in Saudi Arabia and China, signaling a shift from affordable EVs to a high-end tech powerhouse.

A charity auction in Cannes has cast fresh light on BYD’s ambitions far beyond affordable electric cars. The Denza Z9 GT Chopard Edition, a special-edition luxury shooting brake co-created with the jeweller, fetched €700,000 at the amfAR gala on 23 May, with a separate report putting the final price at $811,000. The spectacle is one of several moves that suggest the Chinese automaker is racing to redefine itself as a high-end technology powerhouse.

The most conspicuous signal is BYD’s overture to Formula 1. Where many manufacturers see a cost trap, the company sees a global podium. Vice-president Stella Li has confirmed multiple rounds of talks with former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner in Cannes, alongside meetings with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Entry options range from becoming a drivetrain supplier or title sponsor to fielding an entirely new 12th team – or, as one report adds, acquiring a 24% stake in the Alpine outfit. The 2026 regulatory shift to 50% electric powertrains and fully sustainable fuels provides a natural entry point for BYD’s hybrid and battery technology. Yet the price tag is daunting: an anti-dilution payment to existing teams could run into several billion dollars.

While the racing strategy plays out in the boardroom, BYD is flooding showrooms with metal. In Saudi Arabia, the seven-seat Ti7 SUV launched on 24 May, packing the DM-P super-hybrid system, a 735-kilometre range, and a cabin that boasts 47 storage compartments and a 15.6-inch infotainment screen. The premium SUV is aimed squarely at the Land Rover Defender. Back in China, the third-generation Yuan Plus – sold internationally as the Atto 3 – arrives with “Flash Charging”: a 1,500 kW peak rate that takes the battery from 10% to 70% in roughly five minutes. Two Blade Battery options offer either 540 or 630 kilometres of CLTC-rated range.

Just a day after the Ti7 debut, on 26 May, BYD brought the Sealion 06 DM-i to the Chinese market. This plug-in hybrid sedan starts at around 150,000 yuan and can cover 310 kilometres on electric power alone, with a combined range of 1,845 kilometres. For an extra 12,000 yuan, buyers can add the DiPilot 300 lidar system, underscoring BYD’s push into autonomous driving.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Europe remains a puzzle that BYD is trying to solve through multiple channels. A dedicated factory is under construction in Hungary, granting “Made in Europe” status and dodging potential EU import tariffs. Separate talks with Stellantis over using idle capacity in existing plants have been reported, though BYD has formally ruled out acquiring Maserati. The group’s appetite for European premium brands, however, shows no sign of abating.

The company’s international traction is easiest to measure in South Korea, where Chinese electric vehicles held a 33.9% market share in 2025, up from just 1.1% four years earlier. In the first four months of 2026, BYD alone sold nearly 6,000 vehicles in the country – a tenfold jump year-on-year.

Closer to home, the market has been volatile. Rival NIO slumped roughly 15% in the previous week, weighed down by margin pressure and ambitious delivery targets. BYD is betting that its “God’s Eye” driver-assistance platform can impress investors. The system processes 190 million kilometres of training data daily and is said to reduce parking accident rates to one-fiftieth of human levels. A dedicated strategy event on autonomous technologies is pencilled in for late May 2026.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Investors now have two near-term catalysts to digest: the Sealion 06 launch on Tuesday and any fresh details about the Formula 1 venture. The latter, if consummated, would fundamentally reshape BYD’s technological image – provided the billion-dollar entry fee is manageable.
