The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is making moves on multiple fronts simultaneously, from securing a patent for next-generation solid-state batteries to negotiating the acquisition of idled European factories. The flurry of activity underscores a strategy that balances near-term sales growth with long-term technological leadership, even as its stock price struggles to reflect the operational momentum.

BYD has filed a patent (CN121983643A) with China’s patent office for a composite electrolyte membrane designed for sulfide-based solid-state batteries. This technology promises higher energy density and improved safety over conventional liquid electrolytes. The company plans to begin pilot production of solid-state cells by 2027, with vehicle testing scheduled for 2026-2027. It is also developing a third-generation sodium-ion battery capable of up to 10,000 charge cycles, targeting entry-level vehicles and stationary storage.

At the same time, BYD is accelerating its internal combustion-to-hybrid transition in China. On May 26, the Sealion 06 DM-i goes on sale, offering an all-electric range of up to 310 kilometers and a combined range exceeding 1,800 kilometers. Two days later, the Song Ultra DM-i arrives, equipped with lidar-based driver-assistance systems. Buyers can choose between two battery sizes, while the broader charging infrastructure push continues with ultra-fast stations that can replenish most of a battery in minutes.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Overseas expansion is gaining urgency. Reports indicate BYD is in talks with Stellantis and other European automakers to purchase unused production facilities. The timing is strategic: Chinese manufacturers doubled their European electric-vehicle sales to over 38,000 units in April 2026, capturing 15% market share. Separately, a BYD-owned ship carrying nearly 5,000 vehicles recently departed for Australia, with plans to ship roughly 30,000 cars to the market in May and June. In Saudi Arabia, the BYD Ti 7 just made its debut.

Back home, the company’s grip on the battery market is loosening. In April 2026, BYD installed 10.49 GWh of battery capacity, giving it a 16.8% market share — down from 22.5% (12.84 GWh) in May 2025. Despite the erosion, BYD remains one of the few automakers that produces its own lithium cells in-house, providing a cost and integration advantage.

On May 28, BYD will hold a major "Smart Technology" conference to unveil new advances in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Its fleet with assisted-driving features already includes nearly three million vehicles, and the proprietary "God's Eye" system generates around 190 million kilometers of driving data daily. This event is expected to showcase how BYD links its technology pipeline with market strategy.

The stock, however, has not kept pace. Listed in Hong Kong, the shares trade listlessly below HK$100. Analysts at Simply Wall St peg fair value at HK$180, citing the company’s deep vertical integration and projected annual earnings growth of 23% through 2028. Whether that bullish thesis gains traction will depend on how well BYD translates its manufacturing scale and patent portfolio into sustained profit growth, both at home and abroad.
