A strategic boardroom exit has signaled the start of a deeper, multi-billion dollar technology alliance. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan is stepping down from Meta's board of directors, a move designed to eliminate potential conflicts as the two companies forge an expanded partnership running through 2029. Tan will transition into a specialized advisory role to guide Meta's custom silicon roadmap directly.

The heart of the strengthened pact is the next generation of Meta's in-house AI accelerators, known as MTIA (Meta Training and Inference Accelerator). Broadcom will supply the chip design, advanced packaging, and high-speed networking technology. Crucially, the new MTIA chips will be the AI industry's first custom silicon manufactured using an advanced 2-nanometer process. This technological lead provides a significant performance-per-server-rack advantage over traditional x86 platforms and is tailored for the massive scaling demands of generative AI.

The initial phase of the collaboration secures over a gigawatt of computing capacity for Meta, serving as a launchpad for a multi-gigawatt infrastructure build-out in the coming years. This massive undertaking aligns with Meta's aggressive investment plans, which include a capital expenditure budget of up to $135 billion for 2026. The deal positions Broadcom as a core strategic partner alongside Meta's other major chip suppliers, including AMD and Nvidia.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Broadcom?

Financially, Broadcom is already riding a powerful wave of AI-driven growth. For its first fiscal quarter of 2026, the company reported total revenue of $19.31 billion, a 29.5% year-over-year increase. AI semiconductor revenue within that figure doubled to $8.4 billion, now accounting for more than 43% of total quarterly sales. Management's guidance for the current second quarter projects total revenue of approximately $22 billion, which would represent 47% annual growth. AI-related sales are expected to climb to about $10.7 billion, a surge of roughly 145% compared to the prior-year period.

Analysts see substantial runway ahead. JPMorgan's Harlan Sur projects that Broadcom's total AI revenue could surpass $120 billion by fiscal year 2027. The company's growing portfolio of long-term custom chip agreements, which already includes a pact with Google running through 2031 and another with AI developer Anthropic, supports this optimistic outlook.

The market responded positively to the expanded Meta agreement, pushing Broadcom shares higher. The stock's recent performance underscores its momentum, having more than doubled over the past twelve months. With a Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading near 71, the stock is approaching technically overbought territory, suggesting potential for near-term consolidation even as the fundamental story remains robust.

The formal transition of Hock Tan's role will be completed at Meta's annual shareholder meeting on April 20 in Palo Alto. The event will likely serve as another platform to highlight Broadcom's increasingly central role in building the foundational infrastructure for the AI era.
