Broadcom Inc. has shattered market expectations with its first-quarter financial results, powered by an extraordinary surge in demand for its artificial intelligence semiconductors. The company's record performance prompted CEO Hock Tan to issue a staggering projection: AI chip revenue alone is on track to exceed $100 billion by 2027.

Financial Performance Exceeds Estimates

For Q1 of its fiscal year, Broadcom reported revenue of $19.31 billion, marking a 29% year-over-year increase. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $2.05, edging past the consensus estimate of $2.03. The company's outlook for the current second quarter was even more striking, guiding for revenue of approximately $22 billion. This represents a 47% jump from the prior year and significantly surpasses analyst expectations of $20.56 billion.

AI Segment Emerges as Dominant Engine

The core driver behind these figures is Broadcom's rapidly expanding AI business. Revenue from AI products nearly doubled to $8.4 billion in the quarter. This growth was led by a 140% surge in sales of custom AI chips, known as Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). Additionally, AI-related networking revenue advanced by 60%.

This explosive growth is attributed to major technology firms like Google, Meta, and OpenAI increasingly turning to custom silicon solutions to scale their AI infrastructure efficiently. Broadcom is a primary beneficiary of this industry-wide shift.

A Clear Path to a $100 Billion AI Milestone

CEO Hock Tan provided unprecedented clarity on the company's AI trajectory. "We have a clear line of sight to AI chip revenue—just chips—exceeding $100 billion by 2027," he stated during the earnings announcement.

Tan cited specific, large-scale projects underpinning this forecast. He indicated that Google is expected to deploy one gigawatt of Tensor Processing Units for Anthropic by 2026, scaling to over three gigawatts by 2027. Furthermore, OpenAI is projected to roll out one gigawatt of its first-generation custom chips in 2027. Tan also identified Meta's MTIA custom accelerators as a significant future revenue source, expressing confidence despite some analyst skepticism regarding Meta's in-house chip plans.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Broadcom?

For the ongoing quarter, Broadcom anticipates AI semiconductor revenue will contribute $10.7 billion.

Profitability and Shareholder Returns

The company's operational efficiency is also improving with scale. Broadcom forecasts an adjusted EBITDA margin of 68% for Q2, higher than the 66% analysts had anticipated.

Shareholder returns remained substantial. In the first quarter, $10.9 billion was returned to investors through a combination of $3.1 billion in dividend payments and $7.8 billion in stock repurchases. The board of directors has authorized a new $10 billion share buyback program and approved a 10% increase in the quarterly dividend to $0.65 per share.
