BrainChip Doubles Down on Licensing as AKD1500 Nears Production

BrainChip signs second IP deal with South Korea's Asicland, advances AKD1500 chip to July 2026 production, and targets AKD2500 tape-out on TSMC 12nm.

The neuromorphic computing specialist BrainChip is making strides on two fronts simultaneously: expanding its intellectual property licensing network while advancing its next-generation silicon toward commercial release. The Australian semiconductor firm has inked a new IP deal with South Korean chip designer Asicland, marking the second such agreement in as many months and signaling growing traction for its Akida technology in Asian markets.

Under the terms of the non-exclusive worldwide license, Asicland will embed BrainChip’s Akida IP into its own system-on-chip designs targeting edge AI, automotive, industrial and Internet of Things applications. The compensation structure follows a tiered model typical of semiconductor licensing: upfront evaluation and production fees, followed by ongoing royalties tied to chip sales. BrainChip did not disclose specific revenue figures but said management expects the contract to contribute to earnings over the medium term.

The arrangement is staged — Asicland begins with prototype and testing licenses, which convert to production licenses only when projects reach manufacturing stage. BrainChip retains full ownership of the IP and retains the right to work directly with end customers if needed.

This latest agreement follows a similar licensing deal with EDGEAI announced in March 2026. That partnership sees the Korean semiconductor firm integrating Akida-2 IP into a dedicated SoC product line, initially for rapid-metering solutions, with compensation structured around milestone payments and future revenue sharing.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BrainChip?

Silicon Pipeline Takes Shape

While the licensing business builds momentum, BrainChip’s hardware roadmap is also advancing. The company confirmed that first production silicon for the AKD1500 remains on schedule, with shipments expected to begin in July 2026 over a four-to-six-week window. The initial production run is forecast to yield approximately 70,000 units.

The AKD1500 is designed for power-sensitive applications spanning defense, industrial sensing, robotics and embedded IoT systems. In a separate development, BrainChip has secured Neuromorphyx as a strategic customer for the chip, which will be integrated into the Vision NeuroNode architecture.

Work has already begun on the successor chip, the AKD2500, which will be manufactured using TSMC’s 12-nanometer process. A prototype tape-out is targeted for the second half of 2026, with total project costs estimated at around $2.5 million.

Expanding the Partner Ecosystem

The first quarter brought additional commercial agreements beyond the licensing deals. BrainChip is now collaborating with ForwardEdge ASIC, a Lockheed Martin subsidiary, to develop edge computing solutions for aerospace and defense applications.

To lower the barrier for developer adoption, the company has made its Akida-Pico IP available through FPGA cloud access, allowing customers to test the technology remotely without investing in dedicated hardware.

Financial Picture Improves

Customer inflows for the first quarter of 2026 reached $0.7 million, up from $0.4 million in the prior quarter. Supplier and employee payments totaled $4.3 million during the same period. The company ended 2025 with $31.71 million in liquid assets, bolstered by a A$37 million capital raise completed in November 2025.

BrainChip at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Full-year 2025 revenue climbed to $1.89 million, a 374% increase year-over-year, while the net loss narrowed to $20.47 million from $24.43 million in 2024.

The market responded positively to the Asicland news, with BrainChip shares gaining roughly 5% on Monday to trade back above their 50-day moving average. Still, the stock remains down about 23% year-to-date, suggesting that licensing agreements alone have yet to fully restore investor confidence. The critical question remains how quickly evaluation licenses convert into production orders — only then will the royalty stream that underpins BrainChip’s long-term business model begin to flow in earnest.

BrainChip is scheduled to present its technology roadmap on May 14, 2026, where further details on the Akida strategy, generative AI tools and future hardware offerings are expected.
