A significant strategic pivot at BP, the British energy multinational, is being welcomed by investors. This shift, which marks a decisive move away from its previous green energy ambitions and back toward its core fossil fuel business, has been catalyzed by pressure from activist shareholders. The recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East, which has driven oil prices higher, is providing additional tailwinds for the company's revised direction.

Activist Pressure Drives a New Direction

The recent uptrend in BP's share price, which shows a 9.23 percent gain since the start of the year, began prior to the latest geopolitical concerns. A primary catalyst was the increased stake held by hedge fund Elliott Management, which has built a position exceeding five percent. The investors' demand was clear: reduce experiments in renewables and refocus on the profitable core business. In response, BP's management promptly revised its renewable energy targets and announced plans for increased investment in fossil fuel projects, signaling a clear break from its earlier rhetoric of gradually winding down oil and gas production.

Geopolitical Tensions Add to the Momentum

While the strategic shift was already underway, the conflict in the Middle East has become a dominant market driver. Reports of a potential Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz—a chokepoint for approximately 20% of global oil supply—pushed Brent crude prices above $80 per barrel. For BP, this geopolitical premium translates directly into substantial revenue support, creating a favorable environment for its renewed emphasis on hydrocarbons.

US Shale Oil Takes Center Stage

The cornerstone of BP's revised strategy is its US shale oil business, BPX Energy. The company plans to boost production in this division by eight percent within the current year, reaching 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d). This volume represents about one-fifth of BP's total global output. Looking further ahead, the ambition is to grow this figure to 650,000 boe/d by the end of the decade, all while deploying less capital. Overall, BP aims to bring ten new major upstream projects online by 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BP?

Balance Sheet Repair Over Share Buybacks

Despite benefiting from stronger oil prices, investors received mixed news. Management has suspended its share buyback program. Instead, all free cash flow is being directed toward strengthening the company's financial position. With net debt standing at approximately $22.2 billion, reducing leverage remains the top priority. To further this goal, BP plans asset disposals totaling $20 billion. These measures underscore that financial health currently takes precedence over short-term shareholder returns.

New Leadership for a New Era

The execution of this restructuring will fall to new leadership starting April 1. Meg O'Neill, the former CEO of Woodside Energy, will take the helm as the first external hire and first woman to lead the British oil major. Her immediate challenge will be to balance debt reduction, operational excellence in the oil business, and navigating ongoing geopolitical uncertainty. A key variable in her early tenure will be whether the oil price surge linked to the Hormuz crisis persists long enough to accelerate the achievement of the company's balance sheet objectives.
