In a significant boost to its commercial division, Boeing has landed one of the largest aircraft orders in South Korean aviation history. Korean Air confirmed a firm commitment for 103 jets yesterday, a deal valued at approximately $36.2 billion based on 2025 list prices. This substantial agreement arrives at a pivotal moment for the American aerospace manufacturer, which is in urgent need of positive momentum.

Order Details and Strategic Fleet Renewal

The comprehensive order is designed to overhaul Korean Air's fleet through 2039. It comprises 50 Boeing 737-10 narrow-body aircraft, 25 787-10 Dreamliners, 20 777-9 wide-body jets, and 8 777-8 freighters. This selection provides the carrier with new assets covering short, medium, and long-haul routes, including dedicated cargo capacity. The transaction formalizes a framework agreement initially established in August 2025.

Concurrent Regulatory and Manufacturing Milestones

Separate but related developments provided additional positive context for Boeing's product lines on the same day. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted certification for increased maximum takeoff weights on the 787-9 and 787-10 Dreamliner models. This regulatory approval allows operators to carry up to five additional metric tons of payload on the 787-10 variant or achieve extended range.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Boeing?

Meanwhile, at Boeing's facility in Everett, Washington, workers completed the wing-to-body join for the first 777-8 freighter. This cargo-focused program currently holds 68 orders, with Qatar Airways listed as the launch customer.

Defense Division Bolsters Backlog

Beyond commercial aviation, Boeing's defense segment also reported a new contract award. The company secured a $326 million deal with the U.S. Army, aligning with the Pentagon's ongoing initiative to expand domestic military manufacturing capacity. This award reinforces defense as a stable revenue pillar for the diversified aerospace group.

Market Context and Execution Challenge

Despite these contract wins, Boeing's equity performance has struggled this year, with shares down roughly 13% since January and trading below key moving averages. The announcements from Korean Air and the U.S. Army deliver a clear message regarding demand, which appears robust across Boeing's core markets.

The critical focus for investors and analysts now shifts to execution. Boeing's ability to meet its production schedules and certification timelines—particularly for the 777X family of aircraft, which includes the 777-9 and 777-8 models—will be essential in converting this order backlog into delivered aircraft and sustained financial recovery.
