BMW's strategic pivot towards an all-electric future is gaining tangible momentum, marked by two significant operational developments. The automaker is preparing for the launch of a crucial new electric vehicle while simultaneously integrating advanced humanoid robotics into its production lines, signaling a deepening commitment to its transformation roadmap.

A Milestone Electric Vehicle Nears Production

Central to this shift is the upcoming all-electric BMW i3, a model of paramount strategic importance. Scheduled to begin rolling off the assembly line at the company's Munich headquarters plant in August 2026, this vehicle represents the electric successor to BMW's perennial volume and profit leader, the 3 Series. Customer deliveries are planned for the autumn of that same year.

The technical specifications underscore its flagship status. The BMW i3 50 xDrive will debut with 469 horsepower, an 800-volt charging architecture, and a peak charging capacity of up to 400 kW. Under optimal conditions, a ten-minute charge is projected to provide approximately 400 kilometers of range, with a total WLTP-rated range reaching up to 900 kilometers. Pre-series vehicles are already being built in Munich alongside ongoing series production.

This model is more than just a new car; it serves as a blueprint. By 2027, BMW intends to incorporate its new platform technology into 40 models and model updates. Furthermore, the Munich plant itself is set to transition exclusively to electric vehicle manufacturing from 2027 onward, marking a definitive end date for internal combustion engine production at the facility.

Humanoid Robots Enter the Factory

In a parallel initiative, BMW is pioneering the use of humanoid robots in German manufacturing. A pilot project is underway at the Leipzig plant featuring 'AEON' robots from Hexagon Robotics. Initial deployment began in December 2025, with a further test phase starting in April and a full pilot program slated for summer 2026.

The robots are initially focused on high-voltage battery assembly, a domain where precision and worker safety are critical. BMW has stated that the introduction of this technology is not associated with any planned workforce reductions. The company is building on prior experience; at its Spartanburg plant in the United States, a Figure-02 robot assisted in the production of over 30,000 BMW X3 models across ten months, handling more than 90,000 components.

Financial Headwinds Amid Operational Progress

This operational momentum is unfolding against a backdrop of financial challenges. For 2026, BMW anticipates that tariffs will impact the Automotive segment's EBIT margin by approximately 1.25 percentage points, even after accounting for countermeasures. This pressure is reflected in the company's share price, which currently trades around €78—nearly 19% below its 52-week high recorded in December 2025.

BMW at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

However, the trajectory for battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales remains positive. In 2025, BMW Group sold 442,059 all-electric vehicles worldwide, a 3.6% increase year-over-year. This meant one in every six vehicles delivered was fully electric. For 2026, the group is targeting the delivery of its two-millionth all-electric vehicle, a milestone the launch of the new i3 in Munich is expected to significantly contribute to.
