BMW is pursuing two radically different paths to electrification — one that plugs into the family home and another that screams down the Mulsanne Straight. At the Intersolar Europe 2026 trade fair in Munich, the company unveiled a partnership with Solarwatt that will allow owners of future “Neue Klasse” vehicles to integrate their car into a home energy management system. Days earlier, at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it showed the opposite extreme: a 900-horsepower electric M concept that previews a production i3 M EV. Both launches come as the stock has shed nearly 28% since the start of the year, leaving investors to weigh product ambition against market reality.

The Solarwatt cooperation is BMW’s most concrete step yet toward positioning the car as a home storage device. Customers will be able to order the BMW Wallbox Professional directly from Solarwatt, with deliveries scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. The system works with existing solar installations and is initially aimed at Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. BMW and Solarwatt have been partners since 2013, but the Intersolar platform — running from 23 to 25 June in Munich — turned the concept into a market-ready offer. The idea is that a “Neue Klasse” EV can not only draw electricity from the home network but also feed it back when needed, turning the garage into a mini power plant.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the M Concept Neue Klasse that BMW paraded at Le Mans gives a concrete preview of the all-electric i3 M EV. Four electric motors drive the wheels, fed by a battery pack delivering more than 100 kilowatt-hours of usable energy. Total power is estimated between 800 and 900 PS. The car’s front splitter, rear diffuser and roof are made from natural-fibre composites that generate up to 40% fewer production emissions than conventional carbon fibre. BMW describes the vehicle as an “explorative look” at future high-performance models, but in practice it reads as a near-production blueprint for the electric M3, with volume production pencilled in for 2027.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BMW?

Behind the product glitz, the company continues to repurchase its own shares in size. In the week from 8 to 14 June, BMW bought back roughly 423,000 ordinary shares under its ongoing €2 billion buyback programme. That follows an earlier tranche in early June of around 630,000 shares. The programme runs until April 2027. Despite the repurchases, the stock has been unable to shake off a broader downtrend. At a current level near €69.70, the shares have lost roughly 27% to 28% since the start of the year. The 200-day moving average sits at €84.30, or about 18% above the current price, while the 52-week high of €97.90 remains a distant memory.

Analysts are split but generally see room to recover. A consensus of 23 estimates puts the 12-month price target at €90.28 — implying upside of more than 20%. Ten analysts recommend buying, nine advise holding and four say sell. The divergence reflects uncertainty over how quickly the “Neue Klasse” architecture can ramp up and whether consumer demand for premium EVs will hold up in a choppy macro environment.

BMW reached a symbolic milestone in May 2026 when it produced its two-millionth fully electric vehicle. The Solarwatt partnership and the M concept represent two pillars of the same strategy: moving beyond the traditional car business toward an integrated energy-services model, while simultaneously defending the brand’s performance credentials in the electric age. Whether that dual bet can close the valuation gap with its 52-week high depends on execution speed — and on whether the Neue Klasse resonates as strongly on the driveway as it does on the showroom floor.
