BMW Continues Share Buybacks Amid Sector Challenges
17.03.2026 - 04:36:53 | boerse-global.deDespite facing industry-wide headwinds, BMW AG is proceeding with its program to repurchase its own shares. Between March 9 and 15, 2026, the Munich-based automotive group acquired 235,696 ordinary shares via the Xetra trading platform. While this forms part of a routine process, the ongoing commitment to buybacks sends a distinct message regarding the board's confidence.
A Foundation of Financial Resilience
The company's ability to execute this strategy is underpinned by a consistently robust financial position. For the 2025 fiscal year, BMW Group reported a pre-tax profit exceeding €10 billion, achieving an EBT margin of 7.7%. This performance was delivered in spite of increased tariff pressures and a challenging market climate, with cost savings of €2.5 billion helping to protect profitability.
Looking ahead to 2026, BMW anticipates an operating margin in its automotive segment of between 4% and 6%, indicating a narrower expected range. The decision to allocate capital to share repurchases rather than conserve it entirely highlights management's belief in the firm's strong liquidity.
Progress on Electrification Targets
BMW's strategic shift toward electric vehicles continues to reach significant milestones. In 2025, the company delivered its 1.5 millionth all-electric vehicle and its 3 millionth electrified model since 2013. The brand now has its sights set on surpassing the two-million mark for fully electric vehicle deliveries in 2026.

Share Price Context and Market Outlook
BMW's stock currently trades approximately 8% below its 200-day moving average and has declined around 17% since the start of the year. The buyback initiative alone is unlikely to reverse this trend; for a sustained recovery, the market is looking for greater clarity on international tariff disputes and a rebound in sales momentum as the year progresses.
