The world's largest chemical producer is doubling down on high-margin specialty products, with its latest capacity expansion squarely aimed at capturing growth in Asia's agricultural sector. BASF is boosting production of key plastic additives at its European sites in Ludwigshafen, Lampertheim, and Pontecchio Marconi, Italy. The strategic move, highlighted at the ongoing CHINAPLAS trade fair in Shanghai, targets the massive demand for durable agricultural films in China, Vietnam, and Thailand.

At the heart of the expansion are HALS and NOR-HALS additives, light stabilizers that protect plastics from UV radiation and extreme weather, significantly extending product lifespans. Concurrently, BASF is introducing a new, abrasion-resistant product form that drastically reduces dust during processing. This innovation allows manufacturers to produce thinner, yet more stable films—a critical advantage in agriculture where China is the global leader in plastic film consumption. More durable mulch and greenhouse films translate directly to less waste and greater efficiency for farmers.

The company is leveraging its presence at CHINAPLAS, which runs until April 24, to showcase these and other solutions. The display includes a PFAS-free nanomembrane for textiles and bio-based thermoplastics containing 20 percent renewable raw materials.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

Investors have responded favorably to this focused strategy. BASF shares are trading near €53.45, having gained nearly 20 percent since the start of the year. The stock sits just below its 52-week high of €54.70, though a recent breakout attempt in mid-April was halted by resistance between €54.95 and €55.05. The upcoming news flow will be crucial for determining if the equity can push to new highs.

Management's operational guidance for 2026 targets earnings before special items in a range of €6.2 to €7.0 billion, compared to €6.6 billion delivered last year. While the Nutrition & Care and Chemicals segments are expected to show strong growth, currency effects are likely to dampen performance in the Agricultural Solutions and Materials divisions.

The next major test for this outlook arrives on April 30. The company will release its first-quarter 2026 results, providing analysts with clues on whether price increases observed in March have begun to bolster margins. A key risk factor is elevated raw material costs; the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has pushed up prices for chemical precursors like butadien, and the quarterly report will reveal the extent of the margin pressure.

Also on April 30, the Annual General Meeting will vote on a proposed dividend of €2.25 per share. The confluence of financial results and shareholder decisions makes the date a pivotal moment for assessing the progress of BASF's strategic pivot.
