BASF shares are trading within a whisper of their annual high, yet a formidable technical barrier and a stark divide among analysts are putting the recent rally to the test. The stock, a standout performer in the DAX with a gain of roughly 20% since the start of the year, now faces the critical €55 level—a price point that has capped every breakout attempt for the past three years.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have been a key driver of the advance. Higher oil prices and production outages in the region have provided a tailwind for the chemical giant. A recent survey by the ifo Institute underscores the broad impact, finding that nine out of ten German industrial companies feel the effects of the Iran conflict, with 78% citing increased energy costs. For BASF, oil serves as both an energy source and a raw material, creating a complex exposure. In response to heightened volatility in raw material and logistics costs, the company has announced price increases of up to 30% for household and industrial cleaning products in Europe.

While the market watches the Strait of Hormuz, BASF continues to execute its corporate overhaul. The company exceeded its savings target for 2025, cutting costs by €1.7 billion, with a further €2.3 billion planned for 2026. Major portfolio moves, including the completed €7.7 billion sale of a 60% stake in its coatings business, are progressing. The planned IPO of its agricultural division remains on the agenda.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

This strategic progress contrasts with a mixed fundamental picture. Management's adjusted EBITDA target for 2026 stands between €6.2 billion and €7.0 billion, with even the upper end slightly missing the current analyst consensus of just over €7 billion. BASF cites a weak construction sector and negative currency effects as headwinds. With an expected price-to-earnings ratio of 16 for the current year, the valuation appears ambitious.

The analyst community is deeply split on the stock's trajectory. Deutsche Bank upgraded BASF to a Buy rating with a €55 price target, arguing the firm could benefit from Middle East uncertainty. Goldman Sachs reaffirmed its Buy stance with a €63 target. In the bearish camp, Barclays maintains an Underweight rating with a €40 target—the lowest active forecast among brokers. Kepler Cheuvreux struck a middle ground, downgrading to Hold with a €54 target and cautioning that the thesis of BASF as a net beneficiary of the crisis may be overstated.

Concurrently, BASF's innovation engine is delivering recognition. At the in-cosmetics Global trade fair in Paris, the company's Personal Care business secured two BSB Innovation Awards for high-performance ingredients and was named the most popular supplier on the SpecialChem industry platform. Its Aloversil ingredient, derived from sea buckthorn and designed to promote visually fuller hair, also placed second.

Trading at €53.69, the stock sits just under its 52-week high of €54.70. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 43 indicates neither overbought conditions nor a clear buy signal. All eyes are now on April 30, when BASF will release its first-quarter 2026 results and hold its Annual General Meeting. Shareholders will vote on a proposed dividend of €2.25 per share. These events are poised to deliver the fundamental catalysts that could finally power a decisive move beyond the persistent €55 ceiling.
