BASF shares are trading just shy of their annual peak, buoyed by a dual corporate strategy that pairs deep structural change with targeted growth investments. The stock, currently around €53.45, has gained nearly 20% since the start of the year, sitting roughly 2% below its 52-week high of €54.70. This momentum comes as the German chemical giant prepares for a pivotal shareholder meeting while simultaneously expanding production to capture Asian market growth.

The company is advancing a significant overhaul of its corporate structure, a direct response to high energy costs and volatile demand plaguing Europe's chemical sector. At the Annual General Meeting on April 30 in Mannheim, shareholders will vote on the legal separation of the Agricultural Solutions business unit. This move is widely seen as a precursor to a potential initial public offering, currently envisioned for 2027, and is designed to allow more flexible management of BASF's core operations.

Simultaneously, the company is ramping up its efficiency drive. Having already met its original cost-saving target for the end of 2025 ahead of schedule, management has tightened the belt further. BASF now aims to reduce annual costs by a total of €2.3 billion by the end of this year.

Operational guidance for 2026 remains firm, with the company targeting EBITDA before special items between €6.2 billion and €7.0 billion. The midpoint of this range serves as the key benchmark for the capital market to gauge earnings power in the current environment.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

While streamlining its portfolio, BASF is making strategic capacity additions in Europe with a clear eye on Asian demand. The company is expanding production for plastic additives at its sites in Lampertheim, Germany, and Pontecchio Marconi, Italy. These facilities produce HALS and NOR-HALS light stabilizers, which protect plastics from UV radiation and weathering, extending the lifespan of materials like agricultural films.

This expansion is strategically targeted. China hosts the world's largest market for plastic cultivation films, and BASF identifies substantial growth potential there, as well as in Vietnam and Thailand. The company is showcasing new material solutions, including a PFAS-free nanomembrane for textiles and bio-based thermoplastics with 20% renewable raw materials, at the CHINAPLAS trade fair in Shanghai, which runs until April 24.

All eyes are now on April 30. Beyond the shareholder vote on the spin-off, the meeting will also decide on a proposed dividend of €2.25 per share. More critically, BASF will publish its first-quarter 2026 results on the same day. These figures will provide the first concrete evidence of how effectively the new cost-saving measures are translating into operational performance.

BASF at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Analysts will scrutinize the quarterly numbers for signs that price increases observed in March have begun to improve margins. A persistent risk factor is cost pressure from raw materials; the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has driven up prices for chemical precursors like butadien. The extent of this margin pressure will be revealed in the upcoming report. The stock's next attempt to break through a recent resistance zone between €54.95 and €55.05 may well depend on the news flow from this crucial day.
