BASF faces a pivotal day with Q1 results, AGM, and a key vote on spinning off its Agricultural Solutions unit. Results will test cost cuts against a €200M currency headwind.

BASF SE shares are approaching a critical inflection point. On April 30, the chemical giant will present its first-quarter results for 2026, hold its Annual General Meeting, and ask shareholders to approve a major strategic spin-off—all in a single day. This convergence of events will test investor confidence in the company's ability to navigate currency headwinds and execute its transformation.

The proposed dividend of €2.25 per share for the 2025 financial year is on the AGM agenda. However, the spotlight will be fixed on the Q1 2026 figures. Management has guided for full-year EBITDA before special items to land between €6.2 and €7.0 billion, with the upper end slightly below the analyst consensus of €7.02 billion. A significant drag is expected from foreign exchange, with the weak U.S. dollar alone projected to have burdened the first-quarter operating result by up to €200 million.

Countering this pressure is a demonstrated success in cost-cutting. By the end of 2025, BASF had already realized €1.7 billion in annual savings, surpassing its own target by €100 million. The quarterly report will reveal whether this discipline is enough to offset the currency impact.

A central vote at the meeting will concern the formal carve-out of the Agricultural Solutions division. The unit is slated to become a wholly-owned subsidiary, with the explicit goal of achieving a stock market listing on the Frankfurt exchange by 2027. This move is part of a broader portfolio reshuffle. Another major transaction, the sale of the automotive coatings and surface treatments business to Carlyle and the Qatar Investment Authority, is nearing completion. Valued at €7.7 billion, the deal is expected to generate pre-tax cash inflows of approximately €5.8 billion for BASF, which will retain a 40% equity stake. Closure is planned for the second quarter of 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

The proceeds are feeding an aggressive share buyback program. Since its launch in November 2025, BASF has repurchased nearly 19.4 million of its own shares. The current tranche, running until the end of June 2026, has a volume of up to €1.5 billion. It forms part of a larger €4 billion repurchase package scheduled to run through 2028. This activity, alongside a recent 3.06% stake acquisition by Institutional Capital Group, has provided underlying support for the share price.

Despite a 1.2% dip on a recent Friday to €52.77, the stock remains up nearly 18% year-to-date and trades well above its 200-day moving average of €45.59. It has retreated from a 52-week high of €54.70 reached in early April but still sits about 26% above its July 2025 low. With a Relative Strength Index around 40, the stock is not considered overbought in the short term.

Analyst opinions are sharply divided, reflecting the company's complex narrative. Barclays maintains an Underweight rating with a €40 price target, citing a low free-cash-flow yield of 1.4% and a net debt/EBITDA ratio of 2.7x. In contrast, Goldman Sachs advocates a Buy rating with a €63 target, pointing to structural cost levers and recovery potential.

BASF at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Ahead of the pivotal shareholder day, BASF is showcasing innovation in growth fields aligned with regulatory shifts like the EU Packaging Regulation. At the Techtextil fair in Frankfurt (April 21-24) and the interpack show in Düsseldorf (May 7-13), it is presenting new solutions, including Ultramid® H—its first thermoplastic polyamide with high water permeability—and compostable coatings from its ecovio portfolio for paper packaging.

April 30 will deliver a concrete data point on BASF's operational health. The market's reaction will signal whether it views the agricultural spin-off as a value-unlocking move or an added complexity, and if the company's cost savings can truly outweigh a challenging macroeconomic environment.
