BASF SE is channeling fresh capital into its vegetable seed business, announcing a €40 million investment to expand and modernize its Nunhem facility in the Netherlands. This move, targeting crops resilient to heat and drought, underscores the chemical giant's push into high-value agricultural solutions even as it navigates a complex web of cost pressures, analyst disputes, and a pivotal shareholder meeting.

The Nunhem site, the global headquarters for BASF's agricultural seeds operations, will grow by approximately 6,000 square meters to a total of around 26,000 square meters. Construction is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2028. The upgraded plant, which processes over 1,200 seed varieties across 20 crops including tomatoes and carrots, is planned to run entirely on renewable electricity upon finalization.

This strategic investment coincides with significant operational shifts at BASF's core. At its Ludwigshafen headquarters, a 95-tonne evaporator—the heart of one of the world's most powerful industrial heat pumps—has arrived. From mid-2027, this installation is projected to produce up to 500,000 tonnes of CO?-free steam annually, slashing emissions in formic acid production by up to 98%.

Financial analysts remain deeply divided on the company's trajectory. Goldman Sachs maintains a Buy rating with a €63 price target, with analyst Georgina Fraser forecasting first-quarter EBITDA roughly 16% above her prior estimate. Deutsche Bank recently upgraded the stock to Buy, setting a €55 target. In stark contrast, Barclays holds an Underweight rating with a €40 target, citing a free-cash-flow yield of 1.4% and a net debt/EBITDA ratio of 2.7x. Kepler Cheuvreux downgraded the shares to Hold, lowering its target to €54. The spread between the most optimistic and pessimistic price targets stands at a telling €23.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

The company is actively managing its balance sheet. The sale of its coatings business to Carlyle is expected to close in the second quarter, with BASF retaining a 40% stake. The proceeds bolster an ongoing share buyback program with a total volume of up to €1.5 billion. By mid-March, BASF had already repurchased 17.5 million shares for €789 million, and last week alone it bought back 245,000 of its own shares. In total, the group has retired approximately 2.17% of its voting rights.

Persistent macroeconomic headwinds continue to pose challenges. Higher U.S. tariffs are redirecting global trade flows and increasing competitive pressure in regions with lower import barriers. Furthermore, a weak U.S. dollar could negatively impact the operating result by up to €200 million in the first quarter alone. In response to rising costs for propylene and methanol, BASF will implement price increases for Neopentylglykol (NPG) in the U.S. and Canada, effective April 27, 2026. The company has also been forced to raise prices by up to 30% for cleaning and care products in Europe due to climbing raw material, logistics, and energy costs.

A significant cost relief is on the horizon from 2026: a new industrial electricity price cap will secure power for energy-intensive companies at around five cents per kilowatt-hour, covering up to 50% of consumption. For BASF, this represents a substantial lever.

BASF at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Trading around €53.41, the share price sits just below its 52-week high and has gained nearly 20% since the start of the year. This places it roughly 29% above the low from last summer. All eyes are now on April 30, 2026, when BASF will release its first-quarter results and hold its Annual General Meeting, where shareholders will vote on the dividend proposal for 2025. The company's target for 2026 EBITDA before special items remains between €6.2 and €7.0 billion; whether the Q1 figures support or pressure that range will be a decisive data point for the divided analyst community.
