The German chemical giant BASF has announced an acceleration of its efficiency program, setting a more ambitious savings target while simultaneously tempering financial expectations for the coming years. CEO Markus Kamieth indicated that the company does not foresee a near-term economic recovery or an easing of geopolitical tensions, setting a sober tone for its medium-term planning.

Revised Targets and Restructuring Pace

BASF’s ongoing cost-saving initiative is progressing ahead of schedule. The company reported achieving annualized savings of approximately €1.7 billion by the end of 2025, exceeding its original goal by €100 million. Management has now raised the savings target to €2.3 billion by the end of 2026, up from the previously communicated €2.1 billion.

This effort has involved a workforce reduction of 4,800 positions, a figure that excludes around 1,000 new hires at the company's integrated site in China. Further cuts in administration and IT functions are planned, alongside the relocation of certain operations to lower-cost locations in India and Malaysia.

Capital expenditure is also facing significant constraints. BASF plans to reduce its spending on property, plant, and equipment by 20% to €13 billion for the period spanning 2026 to 2029.

Market Disappointment with 2026 Guidance

The company's financial forecast for 2026 fell short of market expectations. BASF anticipates EBITDA before special items to land between €6.2 billion and €7.0 billion. The midpoint of this range remains notably below the current analyst consensus estimate of approximately €7.0 billion.

Further headwinds are expected from adverse currency effects, which alone could burden first-quarter operating results by up to €200 million. While volumes in China showed positive development in January, demand in other regions remained subdued.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

The recently concluded 2025 fiscal year delivered disappointing results. EBITDA before special items declined by 9.5% to €6.6 billion on sales of €59.7 billion. Free cash flow reached only €1.34 billion—insufficient to fully cover the dividend of €2.25 per share. Despite this shortfall, the company reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the stable payout.

Strategic Portfolio Reshaping Gains Momentum

BASF is advancing a strategic overhaul of its business portfolio. The divestment of the optical brighteners business has been completed, with the coatings division slated to follow in the second quarter. Preparations are underway for a potential initial public offering of its agricultural solutions segment by 2027.

Concurrently, a share buyback program is in progress. Between November 2025 and the end of June 2026, BASF intends to repurchase up to €1.5 billion of its own stock. Since the program's inception, 14 million shares have already been acquired. The total volume is expected to reach at least €4 billion by the end of 2028.

Analyst opinions remain divided. While Berenberg upgraded its rating from "Sell" to "Hold" and Goldman Sachs maintains a "Buy" recommendation, J.P. Morgan continues to advise "Sell." For 2026, BASF projects free cash flow between €1.5 billion and €2.3 billion. The company does not anticipate a marked improvement in the global market environment before 2027 at the earliest.
