BASF shares are trading near annual highs, buoyed by a rapid-fire capital return program and significant progress on a landmark green energy project. The German chemical giant's stock gained 2.26% on Tuesday, standing out in a weak DAX, and is now priced around €51. Since the start of the year, the equity has climbed nearly 15%, with a more impressive 29% gain recorded over a twelve-month period.

This strength is underpinned by aggressive share buybacks. The company repurchased an additional 228,500 of its own shares in the first week of April alone. Since the program's launch in November 2025, BASF has already bought back approximately 19.1 million shares. This initiative is part of a broader €1.5 billion repurchase plan slated for completion by June 2026, two years ahead of schedule. Furthermore, management has outlined an even more extensive framework aiming for at least €4 billion in buybacks through 2028.

Shareholders have another key date to watch. At the Annual General Meeting in Mannheim on April 30, the board will propose a dividend of €2.25 per share for a vote. Combined with the buyback drive, the company's strategy is designed to channel roughly €8 billion back to investors over a four-year span.

The financial capacity for these returns stems largely from a major divestment. The sale of the coatings business to Carlyle and the Qatar Investment Authority generated a pre-tax cash inflow of approximately €5.8 billion. Simultaneously, a rigorous cost-cutting program is providing a counterbalance to operational challenges. BASF has already realized annual savings of €1.7 billion and recently raised its target to €2.3 billion by the end of 2025.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BASF?

Operational headwinds, however, are present. A weak U.S. dollar is expected to negatively impact first-quarter earnings by around €200 million. The company's full-year 2026 guidance also reflects a cautious stance, with an EBITDA target range of €6.2 to €7.0 billion. The upper end of this range slightly misses the current analyst consensus of €7.02 billion.

Alongside its financial engineering, BASF is advancing substantial industrial innovation. The company recently installed a critical 95-tonne component for a massive industrial heat pump at its Ludwigshafen complex. This system, set to begin operations in 2027, is projected to cut CO? emissions by up to 100,000 tonnes annually and has secured up to €310 million in funding from the German government's "Climate Protection Contracts" program.

The firm is also pushing into circular economy solutions. At the upcoming Techtextil trade fair, BASF will showcase its Ultramid Ccycled material, a product derived from hard-to-recycle plastic waste like old tires. As regulatory pressure mounts on the textile industry to adopt sustainable practices, such innovations could open new revenue streams.

BASF at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

All eyes are now on April 30. The AGM will not only decide on the dividend but will also coincide with the release of the first-quarter 2026 results. This dual event will offer a clear snapshot of whether the company's aggressive cost discipline can effectively offset the significant currency drag and keep its ambitious financial and environmental projects on track.
