AST SpaceMobile’s Balancing Act: Insider Exits and Analyst Caution Amid Pre-IPO Momentum

The countdown to SpaceX’s market debut is reshaping the satellite sector, but AST SpaceMobile is pursuing its own trajectory. While the company’s stock has more than tripled over the past twelve months – gaining between 242% and 272% depending on the reference point – it is navigating headwinds that range from insider profit-taking to a downgrade from a key Wall Street bank.

SpaceX has set its IPO price at $135 per share, implying a valuation of roughly $1.75–1.77 trillion. That figure, though slightly below early hopes of $2 trillion, still sends ripples through the space industry. Competitors like Intuitive Machines and Rocket Lab tumbled 15% and 7% respectively on Thursday. AST SpaceMobile, by contrast, held its ground, with shares closing at €92.40 after touching as high as €93.80 earlier in the session – a 0.75% gain that underscored its relative resilience.

A Deep War Chest and a Tight Schedule

The company’s balance sheet provides a cushion. AST holds approximately $3.9 billion in liquidity, enough to fund next-generation satellite deployment through late 2026. Its contracted backlog stands at over $1.2 billion, and management expects 2026 revenue to hit $200 million. First-quarter revenue came in at $14.7 million, offering a baseline for the ramp.

The next milestone is the launch of the BlueBird 8, 9 and 10 satellites, now set to ride a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in mid-June. The team switched providers after problems with Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, but the delay did not affect the timeline. Successfully orbiting those craft would be a technical proof point as the company seeks to build a constellation of 45–60 satellites by year-end.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AST SpaceMobile?

Insider Selling Meets Institutional Buying

Despite the upbeat operational outlook, insider activity has turned heads. AST President Scott Wisniewski sold 25,904 shares at roughly $126 each last week, pocketing $3.3 million. It follows a $4.5 million sale in March. Such moves often spook retail investors, but the broader institutional picture tells a different story. Of the funds tracking the stock, 435 increased their holdings during the period, while 216 trimmed positions. Net institutional demand remains positive.

Analysts, however, are divided. Deutsche Bank recently revised its stance, downgrading the stock from Buy to Hold while cutting its price target to $106. The bank cited the risk of time slippage in reaching the 45–60 satellite threshold. Zacks Research is more bearish, issuing a Sell rating with a projected loss of $1.47 per share for 2026 and flagging intense competition from Starlink and Globalstar.

The Next Catalyst

With the SpaceX IPO set to reframe sector valuations, AST SpaceMobile finds itself in a sweet spot: direct-to-device telecommunications infrastructure is increasingly viewed as a quasi-utility rather than a speculative space play. The Deutsche Bank target of $106 implies roughly 15% upside from current levels, while the company’s own execution will determine whether it can maintain its premium.

AST SpaceMobile at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The mid-June launch is the immediate catalyst. A smooth deployment would strengthen the narrative that AST can scale its constellation on time, just as a new benchmark – the SpaceX listing – recalibrates investor expectations for the entire space economy. For now, the stock remains a story of conflicting signals, but the market is betting that agility and a full order book can outweigh insider exits and analyst caution.
